Rest in His Presence
Meta Description:
A faith-filled devotional on finding true rest in God’s presence. Learn how to release stress, renew your mind, and experience peace that only God can give.
When You Know You’re Running on Empty
Let me be honest…
If I don’t get my rest, I’m not good to anyone.
I can feel it right away.
It shows up in my body.
It shows up in my mind.
And it definitely shows up in my spirit.
I start feeling all over the place.
Trying to do everything, but not really finishing anything.
Thinking about too many things at once.
Moving, but not being effective.
And that’s when I know:
I need to stop.
I need to slow down.
I need to rest.
Not just physically…
But spiritually.
Because there is a difference between being tired and being empty.
The Kind of Rest Your Soul Needs
A lot of people think rest just means sleep.
But I’ve learned that you can sleep and still wake up tired.
Because your body might be lying down, but your mind is still running.
Your heart is still carrying things.
Your spirit is still overwhelmed.
That’s why resting in God’s presence is different.
When I take time to rest in Him, everything begins to shift.
The noise starts to fade.
The pressure begins to lift.
The stress loosens its grip.
And peace starts to settle in.
Matthew 11:28 (KJV) says:
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
That is not just temporary rest.
That is not surface-level rest.
That is soul-deep rest.
Letting Go of What You Were Never Meant to Carry
One of the biggest things I’ve had to learn is this:
I cannot carry everything.
And neither can you.
We try to hold on to worries, stress, responsibilities, and things we cannot even control. Then we wonder why we feel so drained.
But resting in God’s presence means learning how to release what is too heavy for us.
It means saying:
“Lord, I’m giving this to You.”
1 Peter 5:7 (KJV) says:
“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”
Not some of it.
All of it.
Because God never asked us to carry life by ourselves.
My Nightly Prayer for Peace
Every night before I go to sleep, I say:
“Lord, give me a peaceful rest. Let my mind think on Your Word and not what went on today.”
Because I’ve learned something important:
What you go to bed thinking about can affect how you wake up feeling.
If I go to bed stressed, I may wake up stressed.
If I go to bed overwhelmed, I may wake up overwhelmed.
But when I go to bed resting in God, something changes.
I wake up with more peace.
More clarity.
More strength.
More readiness for the day ahead.
Psalm 4:8 (KJV) says:
“In peace I will both lay me down and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.”
That kind of rest only comes from God.
Rest Is Not Weakness — It Is Wisdom
Let’s clear this up:
Rest is not laziness.
A lot of people feel guilty for resting, like they always have to be doing something.
Moving.
Working.
Producing.
Fixing.
Handling everything.
But rest is not falling behind.
Rest is being restored.
God created rest.
God understands our limits.
And even Jesus took time to rest.
Mark 6:31 (KJV) says:
“Come ye yourselves apart… and rest a while.”
If Jesus took time to rest, what makes us think we don’t need to?
Rest is not weakness.
It is wisdom.
When God Slows You Down on Purpose
There are times when we will not stop on our own.
So God allows us to slow down.
He may allow us to feel tired enough to finally sit still.
He may allow things to pause long enough for us to pay attention.
He may remind us that we are not machines—we are people who need Him.
And it is not to harm us.
It is to help us.
Psalm 23:2–3 (KJV) says:
“He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul.”
That word “maketh” stands out.
Because sometimes God will make us rest when we keep ignoring the need for it.
He knows what we need even when we don’t recognize it ourselves.
What Happens When You Rest in His Presence
When you truly rest in God’s presence, you don’t just feel better.
You become better.
Your mind becomes clearer.
Your heart becomes lighter.
Your spirit becomes stronger.
You stop reacting out of stress and start responding with peace.
Isaiah 26:3 (KJV) says:
“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee…”
That is what happens when your focus shifts back to God.
Peace follows.
Stop Trying to Do Everything Yourself
One of the biggest reasons we struggle with rest is that we try to do everything ourselves.
We try to fix everything.
Figure everything out.
Handle everything alone.
But God never asked us to live like that.
Psalm 127:2 (KJV) says:
“It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late… for so he giveth his beloved sleep.”
All that overthinking…
All that worrying…
All that pushing without stopping…
It does not help the way we think it does.
God gives rest to those who trust Him.
Make Rest a Part of Your Life
Rest should not be something you only do when you are completely exhausted.
It should be part of your walk with God.
That can look like:
Quiet time with Him.
Reading His Word.
Praying.
Sitting in silence.
Listening to worship.
Taking a moment to breathe and remember He is in control.
Not rushing.
Not forcing.
Not performing.
Just being with Him.
Because sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is be still.
Psalm 46:10 (KJV) says:
“Be still, and know that I am God…”
That stillness is where peace begins to settle.
Final Reminder: Don’t Fight the Rest
So if God is telling you to slow down…
Listen.
If your body is tired…
Listen.
If your mind is overwhelmed…
Listen.
Because rest is not the enemy.
It may be the very thing God is using to restore you.
You don’t have to keep running.
You don’t have to keep pushing.
You don’t have to carry everything.
Rest in His presence.
Let God handle what you cannot.
Let Him refill you.
Let Him restore you.
And when you rise again, you will rise with more peace, more strength, and a renewed spirit.
Reflection Questions
- What has been draining me physically, mentally, or spiritually?
- Am I making time to rest in God’s presence, or am I constantly on the go?
- What do I need to release to God to truly experience peace?
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for reminding me that true rest is found in You. Help me to let go of everything that is weighing me down and trust You completely. Teach me how to slow down, be still, and spend time in Your presence. Restore my mind, renew my strength, and fill me with Your peace. I give You everything that is overwhelming me, and I choose to rest in You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Messages always hitting !!!! I definitely can relate and feel the same about being busy getting things done but that’s my will not Gods. He has slowed me down to rest and at first I was fighting it thought I was being lazy hitting a downward spiral so I began to fight it still running around busy but with my own worries and what I thought was important, Until God sat me down and made me find peace in being still healing recovering like you said if you’re on empty then you’re good to no one so we need that mental physical spiritual recharge so we can go live our purpose and let God have his way in our lives. He taught me to find peace acceptance in my rest as well as to be proud I can sit in peace and not be restless that is a skill in its own. Next time you feel yourself being called to rest in Gods presence, don’t! ignore those worldly duties, they will always be there. Let Gods grace guide you on how to handle those responsibilities as well as your Kingdom responsibilities with balance with purpose with INTENT!!!!
There came a point where I couldn’t keep going the way I was. I was moving too fast, doing too much, trying to hold everything together on my own. And even though I didn’t want to admit it, I was tired- mentally, and physically, and spiritually. That’s when God stepped in. Not in the way I expected, and definitely not in a way I would’ve chosen. But He allowed everything to slow me down. He let me reached a place where I had no choice but to stop, sit down, and rest. At first, it felt frustrating- like things were being taken from me or put on pause for no reason. But deep down, I know now it wasn’t a punishment…. It was protection. God knew I needed rest before I broke completely. He knew I needed to be still long enough to hear Him, to feel Him, and to find myself again without all the noise and pressure. Even though I didn’t understand it in the moment, I’m grateful. Because sometimes God can get our attention is by slowing us down on purpose. And in that stillness, I realized…. Rest wasn’t weakness. It was necessary. And it was exactly what I needed. Thank God for REST!
