Struggling with needing approval from others? Learn how to stop seeking validation from people and start finding your worth, confidence, and direction in God.
I Had to Ask Myself This Question
Why do I feel like I need someone else to say,
“You got this”… before I believe it myself?
Why do I need people to:
- Approve what I’m doing
- Agree with my decisions
- Support me before I move forward
When deep down…
I already know what God placed in me.
That’s when I had to face the truth:
I was seeking validation from people instead of trusting what God already showed me.
What Does Validation Really Mean?
Let’s break it down simply.
Validation means:
The act of confirming that something is true, correct, or approved.
So when you’re seeking validation from others, you’re really saying:
👉 “I need you to confirm that I’m doing the right thing.”
👉 “I need you to tell me I’m enough.”
👉 “I need your approval to feel secure.”
But here’s the problem:
People don’t always have the authority to confirm what God has already approved.
Why Do We Seek Validation from Others?
People don’t just wake up needing validation — it comes from somewhere.
1. Lack of Confidence in Ourselves
Sometimes we don’t trust our own decisions.
So we look to others to:
- Agree with us
- Confirm us
- Push us forward
But confidence doesn’t come from people…
It comes from knowing who you are in God.
2. Fear of Being Wrong
We think:
- “What if I mess this up?”
- “What if I’m making the wrong decision?”
So instead of trusting God…
We run to people.
3. Wanting to Feel Accepted
Let’s be honest again.
Sometimes we just want to feel:
- Seen
- Heard
- Supported
But chasing acceptance from people can lead you to:
👉 Lower your standards
👉 Doubt yourself
👉 Stay stuck
4. Past Rejection or Hurt
If you’ve ever been:
- Ignored
- Rejected
- Overlooked
You may now feel like you need constant approval to feel secure.
But healing doesn’t come from people approving you…
It comes from God restoring you.
The Truth About Seeking Validation from People
Let me say this clearly:
People can support you… But they cannot define you.
Some people:
- Will clap for you
- Will encourage you
But others:
- Will doubt you
- Will talk about you
- Will secretly be against you
And the truth is…
👉 You may still go to them anyway
👉 Even when you know they don’t truly support you
That’s what seeking validation does.
It keeps you going back to people who were never meant to guide you.
God Is the Only Validation You Truly Need
Let’s shift this the right way.
If God gave it to you…
Why are you asking people to approve it?
đź“– Galatians 1:10 (KJV)
“For do I now persuade men, or God? …for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.”
This means:
👉 You can’t live for God and chase people’s approval at the same time.
Because one will always pull you away from the other.
God Is Always Guiding You — Even When You Don’t See It
You said something powerful:
God is always guiding us in the right direction… even when we don’t understand.
That’s real.
God doesn’t:
- Stay silent without purpose
- Leave you confused without direction
đź“– Proverbs 3:6 (KJV)
“In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
👉 You don’t need people to direct you
👉 You need God to lead you
How to Stop Seeking Validation from Others
Now let’s get practical — because this is where change happens.
1. Start Validating Yourself Through God’s Truth
You don’t need someone else to tell you who you are.
God already did.
đź“– Psalm 139:14 (KJV)
“I am fearfully and wonderfully made…”
That means:
- You are enough
- You are valuable
- You are created with purpose
👉 When you believe that, you stop needing others to confirm it.
2. Stop Explaining Yourself to Everyone
Not everyone needs to understand your decisions.
Let me say that again:
Not everyone needs an explanation.
Some things God gives you are:
- Personal
- Private
- Purpose-driven
And the more you explain yourself…
The more you open the door for doubt and opinions.
3. Be Careful Who You Go To
Everyone is not for you.
Some people:
- Will smile in your face
- But not support you behind your back
And yet, we still go to them looking for validation.
👉 You have to stop going to people who don’t align with what God is doing in your life.
4. Trust What God Already Showed You
If God gave you something…
Stand on it.
Even if:
- Nobody understands it
- Nobody agrees with it
- Nobody supports it
Because God didn’t give it to them.
He gave it to you.
5. Stop Needing Constant Approval
It’s okay to get encouragement.
But there’s a difference between:
âś” Encouragement
❌ Dependence
If you can’t move unless someone approves…
That’s dependence.
And that will keep you stuck.
It’s Okay to Receive Support — But Don’t Depend on It
Let’s balance this.
It’s not wrong for someone to say:
- “You got this.”
- “I support you.”
But your strength shouldn’t come from that.
Because what happens when:
- They don’t show up?
- They don’t agree?
- Don’t they support you?
👉 Will you stop moving?
That’s why your foundation has to be God, not people.
When You Stop Seeking Validation, Everything Changes
When you stop looking for approval from others:
- You move with confidence
- You trust yourself more
- You hear God more clearly
- You stop second-guessing everything
And most importantly…
You stop shrinking yourself to fit other people’s expectations.
Final Thought: Look to God, Not People
So let me leave you with this:
You don’t need anyone to approve what God already gave you.
You don’t need people to confirm your worth.
You don’t need validation from those who don’t even understand your purpose.
Instead:
👉 Look to God
👉 Trust what He placed in you
👉 Walk in confidence
Because when you know:
“God gave this to me.”
That’s all the validation you need.
