Do you feel empty even though you believe in God? Learn the real reasons behind spiritual emptiness and how to fill that space through trust, truth, and God’s Word.
I Had to Be Honest About This Feeling
There was a time I had to sit with myself and ask:
“Why do I feel empty… even though I believe in God?”
Because I did believe in Him.
I knew He was real.
I knew He loved me.
I knew He was always there.
But that feeling inside?
That emptiness…
It didn’t match what I believed.
And that can be confusing.
Because in your mind you’re saying:
“I trust God.”
But in your heart…
Something still feels off.
Is It Wrong to Feel Empty as a Believer?
Let’s clear this up first.
No, it is not wrong to feel empty sometimes.
Even strong believers have moments where they feel:
- Drained
- Distant
- Overwhelmed
- Emotionally empty
But here’s the difference:
👉 Feeling empty is one thing. Living in emptiness is another.
God never created you to stay in that place.
Why Do I Feel Empty Even Though I Believe in God?
Let’s talk about the real reasons — not just surface-level answers.
1. You Believe in God… But You May Not Fully Trust Him
This is something we don’t always say out loud.
You can believe in God and still struggle to trust Him fully.
You may say:
- “I trust God.”
But deep down:
- You overthink everything
- You worry constantly
- You try to control outcomes
And when trust is weak…
Peace becomes unstable.
📖 Proverbs 3:5 (KJV)
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”
👉 That means:
- Not half-trust
- Not sometimes trust
- All your heart
Because when you lean on your own thoughts…
You will drain yourself mentally and emotionally.
And that can feel like emptiness.
2. You’re Overthinking Instead of Resting in God
Let’s be honest.
Sometimes that emptiness isn’t because God is absent…
It’s because our minds are overwhelmed.
Overthinking will have you:
- Replaying situations
- Questioning everything
- Creating problems that aren’t even there
And when your mind is full of noise…
Your spirit starts to feel empty.
📖 Isaiah 26:3 (KJV)
“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee…”
👉 Peace comes when your mind is on God
👉 Emptiness grows when your mind is on everything else
3. You’re Looking for People to Fill What Only God Can Fill
This is a big one.
You can have:
- Family
- Friends
- A relationship
- Support system
And still feel empty.
Why?
Because people can support you…
But only God can complete you.
There is a space inside of you that was designed for Him.
And when we try to fill that space with:
- Attention
- Validation
- Relationships
…it never fully satisfies.
4. You’re Not Feeding Yourself Spiritually
Let me say this in love.
Sometimes we feel empty because we are not feeding ourselves.
You can’t expect to feel full spiritually…
If you’re not spending time with God.
That means:
- Not reading your Word
- Not praying consistently
- Not sitting in His presence
📖 Matthew 4:4 (KJV)
“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”
👉 Just like your body needs food…
👉 Your spirit needs the Word
If you’re not feeding it…
You will feel empty.
5. You’re Listening to the Wrong Voice
Let’s talk about this clearly.
Not every thought you have is from you.
Some thoughts are:
- Fear
- Doubt
- Lies
- Insecurity
And the enemy will use those thoughts to make you feel:
- Alone
- Unworthy
- Empty
But here’s the truth:
God does not speak emptiness over you.
He speaks:
- Life
- Truth
- Peace
- Identity
So if your thoughts are pulling you down…
That’s not God.
The Truth About That Empty Feeling
Let me help you understand something deeper.
That emptiness you feel?
👉 It’s not always a bad thing.
Sometimes it’s a signal.
A signal that:
- You need to reconnect with God
- You need to slow down
- You need to refocus your mind
It’s not there to destroy you…
It’s there to redirect you.
How to Fill That Empty Space the Right Way
Now let’s get practical.
Because this is where change happens.
1. Get Back in Your Word
If you feel empty…
Go to the Word.
Don’t just read it — look for yourself in it.
Find scriptures that remind you:
- Who you are
- What God says about you
- What He promised you
👉 The Word doesn’t just inform you
👉 It fills you
2. Be Honest in Prayer
Stop trying to sound perfect when you pray.
Tell God:
- “I feel empty.”
- “I feel off.”
- “I need you.”
God already knows how you feel.
He just wants you to come to Him.
3. Stop Trying to Fix Everything Yourself
This is where a lot of us struggle.
We try to:
- Figure everything out
- Control every outcome
- Carry everything alone
And it drains us.
📖 1 Peter 5:7 (KJV)
“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”
👉 You were never meant to carry everything.
4. Guard Your Thoughts
Pay attention to what you’re thinking daily.
Ask yourself:
- Is this thought from God?
- Is this building me or breaking me?
If it’s not from God…
Don’t hold onto it.
5. Stop Trying to Replace God With People
People are a blessing…
But they are not your source.
If you depend on people to fill your emptiness:
👉 You will always feel like something is missing
Because that space belongs to God.
You Are Never Truly Empty
Let me remind you of something important:
If you believe in God…
You are not empty — you are just disconnected in the moment.
Because God is always there.
He didn’t leave you.
He didn’t forget you.
He didn’t remove His presence.
Sometimes we just:
- Drift
- Get distracted
- Get overwhelmed
But he’s still right there.
Final Thought: Let God Fill That Space
So if you’re feeling empty today…
Don’t ignore it.
Don’t try to cover it.
Don’t try to fill it with the wrong things.
Instead…
Go back to the One who created you.
The One who understands you.
The One who can truly fill that space.
Because when God fills you…
It’s different.
It’s not temporary.
It’s not forced.
It’s not dependent on people.
It’s real.
It’s lasting.
It’s complete.
Reflection Questions
- What is really causing my emptiness right now?
- Am I trusting God fully, or trying to control everything?
- What have I been using to try to fill this space?
- How can I reconnect with God daily?
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for always being present, even in the moments when I feel empty. Help me to understand that my feelings do not change who You are. Teach me to trust You fully and not lean on my own understanding. When my mind begins to overthink, bring me back to Your peace. When I feel empty, remind me that You are the only one who can truly fill that space.
Help me to seek You daily, to stay in Your Word, and to recognize Your voice over every other voice. Remove every lie that tells me I am alone or lacking, and replace it with Your truth.
Fill me, Lord, in every area where I feel empty.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Ty
