Releasing Discouragement Through Prayer

There are times when I can be doing everything I know to do and still become discouraged.

I am praying.

I am trying.

I am being patient.

I am doing my best to trust God.

But I look around and think:

“Lord, nothing seems to be happening.”

That feeling can be hard.

Especially when you have been working toward something for a long time.

You may have been praying for a change.

Waiting for an opportunity.

Trying to improve something in your life.

Believing God for your family.

Working on a goal.

And after all that effort, things still seem to look the same.

That is when discouragement can start talking.

“Maybe this isn’t going to work.”

“Maybe you should stop trying.”

“Maybe nothing is ever going to change.”

I have learned that I cannot let those thoughts stay in my mind and grow.

Whatever I am carrying, I need to take it to God.

I need to talk to Him the same way I would talk to someone I trust.

I do not have to come to God pretending everything is fine.

If I am discouraged, I can tell Him:

“Lord, I’m discouraged.”

That is where releasing it begins.

Discouragement Can Make Progress Look Like Failure

This is something we have to be careful about.

Just because you do not see the result yet does not mean nothing is happening.

Sometimes we only count progress when we can see something big.

The door opened.

The prayer was answered.

The situation changed.

The blessing arrived.

But what about everything happening before that?

Maybe you are becoming more patient.

Maybe you are learning how to trust God instead of panicking.

Maybe you are handling something differently than you would have a year ago.

Maybe God is preparing an opportunity you cannot see yet.

Maybe He is working on someone else’s heart.

Those things count too.

I do not want discouragement convincing me that God is doing nothing simply because I cannot see the finished result.

A seed can be growing underground long before anything appears above the soil.

Sometimes our prayers are like that.

Something may be happening where we cannot see it yet.

I Need Somewhere to Put What I Am Carrying

When I am discouraged, holding everything inside does not help me.

My mind will keep going back over it.

I will think about what did not happen.

What I expected.

How long I have been waiting.

What I thought things would look like by now.

Before long, one disappointment feels heavier because I have been carrying it around all day.

Prayer gives me somewhere to put it.

Instead of carrying it in my mind, I can place it before God.

“Lord, this is bothering me.”

“I don’t understand why this hasn’t changed.”

“I thought I would be further along by now.”

“I need You to help me because I don’t want this discouragement taking over.”

I believe God wants that honesty.

He already knows what I am feeling anyway.

Talk to God Like You Know Him

Sometimes people make prayer harder than it has to be.

We think we need certain words.

A certain tone.

A long prayer.

I don’t believe that.

If I can talk openly with my parents, family, friends, or somebody else I trust, why would I think I cannot talk openly with God?

He knows me better than all of them.

I can come to Him exactly as I am.

I can tell Him I am tired.

I can tell Him I am disappointed.

I can tell Him something hurt me.

I can even say:

“Lord, I don’t understand what You’re doing right now.”

Prayer is a relationship.

Relationships require honest communication.

I do not want to only talk to God when I have something nice to say.

I want to know I can come to Him when my heart is heavy too.

One Bad Moment Does Not Mean You Are Back at the Beginning

This is something else discouragement will try to make us believe.

Maybe you were doing well.

Then something happened.

You had a bad day.

Something fell through.

You received disappointing news.

You made a mistake.

And suddenly you feel like everything you have worked toward is gone.

It isn’t.

One difficult day does not erase your growth.

One closed door does not mean every door is closed.

One mistake does not mean you cannot recover.

One disappointing answer does not mean God has forgotten you.

Sometimes you need to look at the situation for what it is instead of allowing discouragement to make it bigger.

Maybe it was simply a difficult day.

Let it be one.

Pray.

Rest.

Get yourself together.

Then continue.

You May Need to Stop Looking at Everybody Else

Comparison can make discouragement worse very quickly.

You are already wondering why something has not happened for you.

Then you look over and see it happening for somebody else.

They received the opportunity.

Their business is growing.

Their prayer was answered.

They got married.

They purchased the house.

They reached the goal.

Now you are thinking:

“Lord, what about me?”

I understand the feeling.

But somebody else’s blessing does not mean God took yours away.

Their timing is not your timing.

Their life is not your life.

If I keep measuring my progress by what somebody else has, I will overlook what God is doing with me.

I can celebrate another person’s blessing and still trust God with my own journey.

Pray Before Discouragement Changes Your Attitude

Discouragement does not always stay inside.

Sometimes it starts showing up in how we treat people.

We become short-tempered.

We stop being excited for others.

We withdraw.

We complain more.

We lose motivation.

That is why I want to catch discouragement before it starts changing my character.

I can say:

“Lord, I know I’m disappointed right now. Please don’t let this make me bitter.”

That prayer matters to me.

I may not be able to change my situation immediately, but I can ask God to help me with my response while I am going through it.

Sometimes God Sends a Person

I believe in taking things to God.

I also believe God can send people to help us.

Sometimes you pray, and later someone calls you at exactly the right time.

They may not even know you were discouraged.

They say something that lifts you.

They remind you of a Scripture.

They listen.

They pray with you.

They give you advice.

Or maybe they simply say:

“Keep going.”

That may be part of God’s answer.

We should not become so determined to handle everything privately that we reject the people God sends.

Sometimes He knows we need someone walking beside us for a little while.

There is nothing wrong with that.

Don’t Make People Your Only Source

At the same time, I cannot depend completely on people to keep me encouraged.

People have lives too.

They may not always answer the phone.

They may not know what to say.

They may be dealing with their own situations.

That is why my relationship with God matters.

I appreciate the people He has placed in my life.

But when nobody is available, I still need to know how to call on Him for myself.

I need to know where my real strength comes from.

Psalm 55:22 (KJV)

“Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee…”

That Scripture tells me exactly what to do with the burden.

Cast it on Him.

Not carry it until I cannot take anymore.

Stop Rehearsing the Disappointment

Sometimes we pray about something and then spend the rest of the day replaying it.

We gave it to God at 8:00 in the morning and picked it back up by 8:15.

I know how easy that can be.

Your mind goes back there.

“What if this never changes?”

“What if I tried all of this for nothing?”

When I catch myself doing that, I need to remind myself:

“I already prayed about this.”

That does not mean I can never pray about it again.

It means I do not have to spend every minute worrying between prayers.

There is a difference between praying consistently and worrying constantly.

I want prayer to give me peace, not become another place where I repeat my fears.

Sometimes You Need to Rest Before You Quit

Everything feels worse when you are exhausted.

Something that might normally be manageable can feel impossible when your mind and body are tired.

Before deciding:

“I can’t do this anymore,”

maybe ask yourself:

“Do I need to quit, or do I need to rest?”

Those are not the same thing.

Take a little time.

Clear your head.

Pray.

Get some sleep.

Step away from the situation for a moment if you can.

Then look at it again.

You may realize you did not need to give up at all.

You just needed a break.

Remember Why You Started

If discouragement comes while you are working toward something God placed on your heart, go back to the beginning.

Why did you start?

What did God give you?

What were you excited about?

What has already happened since you began?

Sometimes we become so focused on what has not happened yet that we forget how far we have already come.

Look back, but not so you can live in the past.

Look back so you can remember.

God has already helped you.

You have already grown.

You have already made progress.

That can give you enough encouragement for the next step.

Your Prayer Doesn’t Have to Change the Situation Immediately

Sometimes prayer changes us before it changes what we are praying about.

I may start praying upset.

Then after talking to God, I feel calmer.

Nothing around me changed.

The same situation is waiting for me when I finish praying.

But now I can handle it differently.

That is powerful.

We sometimes overlook that because we are waiting for the big answer.

But peace is an answer too.

Strength is an answer.

Clarity is an answer.

The ability to get up and try again is an answer.

God may not have removed the problem yet, but He gave you what you needed to continue through it.

Don’t Let Discouragement Speak Louder Than What You Know About God

Discouragement talks about what you see.

Faith reminds you of what you know.

I may see delay.

But I know God is faithful.

I may see a closed door.

But I know He can open another one.

I may feel tired.

But I know I can ask Him for strength.

I may not understand the process.

But I know I do not have to walk through it alone.

That is what I want to remind myself of.

Feelings are real, but they do not have to be in charge.

Give Yourself Permission to Have a Moment

I don’t believe we need to pretend we are never discouraged.

Sometimes you need a moment.

Cry if you need to cry.

Sit quietly.

Talk to God.

Talk to someone you trust.

You do not have to immediately smile and act like nothing bothered you.

What matters is that you do not make that moment your permanent home.

Feel it.

Bring it to God.

Then ask:

“Lord, how do I move forward from here?”

That is different from pretending.

It is choosing not to stay stuck.

Keep Doing What God Told You to Do

One of the worst times to quit is when discouragement is making the decision for you.

If God clearly tells you it is time to stop something, listen.

But do not confuse being discouraged with being released.

Maybe you do not see results yet.

Keep working.

Maybe the audience is small.

Keep encouraging.

Maybe progress is slow.

Keep growing.

Maybe you have been praying longer than you expected.

Keep trusting.

Discouragement should not have the final vote.

Let God make that decision.

Releasing Does Not Mean You Stop Caring

When I say give it to God, I do not mean suddenly stop caring about the situation.

I can care without carrying it in an unhealthy way.

I can pray and still take necessary action.

I can want something to change while trusting God’s timing.

Releasing is saying:

“Lord, I have done what I can. I am giving You the part I cannot control.”

That is where I want to be.

I do not need to carry God’s part and mine.

Final Thoughts: Put It Down

Maybe you have been discouraged because you have not seen the results you expected.

You have been trying.

Praying.

Waiting.

Doing what you know to do.

And you are tired.

I want to encourage you not to automatically call it failure.

You may simply be in the middle.

The middle can be frustrating because you are far enough from the beginning to be tired, but not close enough to the end to see everything coming together.

That is where prayer becomes so important.

Talk to God.

Not with perfect words.

Talk to Him like you know Him.

Tell Him:

“Lord, this is heavy.”

“I need encouragement.”

“I need direction.”

“I need help not to give up.”

Then listen.

God may give you peace.

He may give you a new idea.

He may tell you to rest.

He may tell you to continue.

He may send someone to encourage you.

However the help comes, be open to it.

I know going forward that I do not want to hold on to discouragement until it becomes part of me.

I want to release it.

I cannot work out everything I am going through by myself.

There are situations only God can handle.

There are things only He can change.

And there are moments when He may use someone else to walk beside me while He is working.

My part is to trust Him.

I may not see anything happening today.

That does not mean nothing is happening.

So I will keep praying.

Keep believing.

Keep doing what He gives me to do.

And when discouragement tries to settle back into my heart, I will remind myself:

“This is too heavy for me to keep carrying. Lord, I’m giving it back to You.”

Put it down.

Let God hold it.

And take your next step with a little less weight.

Galatians 6:9 (KJV)“And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”

Reflection Questions

  1. What discouragement have I been carrying that I need to release to God?
  2. Am I calling something a failure simply because I have not seen the result yet?
  3. What would it look like for me to pray, do my part, and trust God with what I cannot control?

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

I give You the discouragement I have been carrying.

When I cannot see progress, help me trust that You are still working. Keep me from giving up simply because the answer has not come yet.

Give me peace, strength, and wisdom for my next step. When I need encouragement from someone else, send the right people into my life and help me receive their support.

I cannot carry everything, Lord, so I place what I cannot control into Your hands.

Help me keep believing and moving forward.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

With Love,

Ty 🤍

1 thought on “Releasing Discouragement Through Prayer”

  1. I am learning to release my discouragement by talking to God instead of carrying it all by myself. I can be honest with Him about what is hurting me, what I don’t understand, and what is weighing on my heart. When I pray, I give my worries to God and trust Him to give me peace, strength, and hope. I may feel discouraged, but I know I don’t have to stay there because God is with me.
