Struggling to make time for God? Learn how to prioritize your relationship with Him, grow spiritually, and start putting God first in your daily life.
I Had to Ask Myself a Real Question
I had to be honest with myself.
If I can make time for my job…
My family…
My friends…
Vacations…
Even just “me time”…
Then why couldn’t I make time for God?
That question sat with me.
Because the truth is—I knew how to make time when I really wanted to.
So it wasn’t about not having time.
It was about priorities.
And I had to check myself.
When God Wasn’t My Priority
There was a time in my life when I was just doing my own thing.
I wasn’t focused on:
- Reading my Bible
- Praying consistently
- Worshiping
- Fasting
Honestly, it wasn’t even on my mind like that.
I was living how I wanted to live, doing what I wanted to do—and I thought I was fine.
But here’s the part I had to really face:
When something went wrong…
When I needed help…
When I needed God to move…
That’s when I made time for Him.
And I had to admit:
That wasn’t right.
Only Calling on God When You Need Something
Let’s be real.
It’s easy to call on God when you need something.
When life gets hard.
When things aren’t working out.
When you need answers.
But what about when things are going well?
Do we still seek Him the same way?
Or do we go back to doing our own thing?
I had to recognize that I was treating God like an option…
Instead of making Him a priority.
And that had to change.
Why Making Room for God Matters
God is not meant to fit into your schedule.
He is meant to be the center of it.
Matthew 6:33 (KJV) says:
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
That means God should come first.
Not last.
Not when it’s convenient.
Not only when you’re in need.
First.
Because when you put God first…
Everything else starts to fall into place.
When God Showed Me What I Was Doing Wrong
There came a point where God showed me something clearly.
Why things weren’t working.
Why I felt off.
Why do I keep going through certain situations.
It wasn’t just what was happening around me…
It was how I was moving.
I wasn’t putting Him first.
I was trying to handle life my way—and then going to Him when it didn’t work out.
And once I saw that…
I knew I had to change.
The Moment That Checked Me
I remember listening to the song “Make Room” by Jonathan McReynolds.
And something about that song hit me.
The words made me stop and reflect.
It wasn’t just music—it was a message.
It made me look at myself and say:
“Lord, forgive me for not putting You first.”
Because it became clear:
I had made room for everything else…
But not consistently for God.
Making Room Is a Decision
At the end of the day, making room for God is a choice.
You have to be intentional.
You have to decide:
“I’m going to put God first.”
That might look like:
- Starting your day with prayer
- Reading your Bible before anything else
- Taking time to worship
- Being mindful of God throughout your day
It doesn’t have to be complicated.
But it does have to be consistent.
God Desires Relationship, Not Leftovers
God doesn’t want what’s left of your time.
He wants your heart.
He wants your attention.
He wants your consistency.
Revelation 3:20 (KJV) says:
“Behold, I stand at the door, and knock…”
God is always there…
But it’s up to us to open the door.
It’s up to us to make space for Him.
Start With God First
If you’re someone who keeps a to-do list…
Ask yourself this:
Is God on that list?
And not just on the list—
Is He first?
Because when you start your day with God…
Everything else flows differently.
You think more clearly.
You move wiser.
You respond better.
That doesn’t mean everything will be perfect.
But it does mean you won’t be going through it alone.
Even When Life Gets Busy
Life will always be busy.
There will always be something to do.
But if we’re not careful…
We’ll fill our lives with everything else—
And leave no room for God.
That’s why making room has to be intentional.
You don’t wait until you “have time.”
You make time.
Make Room Before Everything Else
This is what it comes down to:
We have to make room for God before anything else.
Ask Him to move things around.
Ask Him to help you prioritize Him.
Ask Him to guide your day.
Because when God is first…
Everything else finds its place.
Final Thought: Make Room Daily
Making room for God is not a one-time decision.
It’s daily.
Every day you wake up, you choose:
“God, You come first.”
Even if it’s a simple prayer.
Even if it’s a few moments in His Word.
Start there.
Because a little consistency grows into something strong.
So make room for God.
Not just when you need Him…
But because you love Him.
Reflection Questions
- Am I making time for God daily, or only when I need something?
- What do I need to move or adjust to put God first?
- How can I start making room for God in my daily routine?
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Forgive me for the times I did not put You first. Help me to make room for You in my daily life and to seek You before anything else. Teach me to prioritize my relationship with You and to stay consistent in prayer, reading Your Word, and walking with You. Order my steps and guide my day so that everything I do reflects You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Amen. This is a wonderful post to self-reflect on where we are in our walk with Christ; not only to be honest and look within but to look at the how, when and why we are walking with Christ and if it is done earnestly. Jesus spoke these words, Matthew 6:33 (KJV) says:
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” This was a command to do daily so that our daily bread could sustain us throughout the day.
May this day of self- reflection reignite the fire of God within us all.
God bless,
Dawn L.
