Building a Relationship With God, Not Just Religion

Meta Description:

A faith-filled devotional about moving beyond routine religion and building a real, personal relationship with God through prayer, obedience, trust, and daily connection with His Word.

Building a Relationship With God, Not Just Religion

One thing I have learned in my walk with God is that following Him is not just about religion. It’s about a relationship.

For a long time, many people have thought that being close to God simply means going to church, listening to sermons, or knowing scriptures. Those things are important, but they are not the whole picture.

God does not just want us to know about Him.
He wants us to know Him personally.

Religion can sometimes focus on routines—what day you go to church, how long you pray, or what traditions you follow. But a relationship with God is much deeper than that. A relationship means connection. It means communication. It means spending time with Him and allowing Him to guide your life.

When you build a relationship with God, it becomes something real and personal, not just something you do out of habit.

God Desires a Personal Relationship With Us

The beautiful thing about God is that He desires a relationship with us. He created us not just to follow rules but to walk with Him, talk with Him, and grow in faith.

Jeremiah 29:13 (KJV) says:

“And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.”

That scripture reminds me that God wants us to seek Him wholeheartedly. When we truly search for Him, we begin to experience His presence in our lives.

A relationship with God is not built overnight. Just like any relationship, it grows through time, trust, and communication. The more we spend time with Him, the closer we become to Him.

Prayer: Talking With God Daily

One of the most important ways to build a relationship with God is through prayer. Prayer is simply talking to God. It does not have to be perfect or complicated. Sometimes people feel like they have to say the right words or pray in a certain way, but God is not looking for perfect words—He is looking for a sincere heart. Prayer is how we share our thoughts, our worries, our gratitude, and our desires with God.

Philippians 4:6 (KJV) reminds us:

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”

That scripture encourages us to bring everything to God. Not just the big problems. But the small things, too. When we talk to God throughout the day, it strengthens our relationship with Him and reminds us that we are never alone.

Spending Time in God’s Word

Another important part of building a relationship with God is reading His Word. The Bible is not just a book of stories. It is God’s way of speaking to us, guiding us, and helping us understand His will.

Psalm 119:105 (KJV) says:

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

God’s Word gives direction. When we read scripture regularly, it helps us make better decisions and stay aligned with God’s purpose for our lives.

Sometimes when I read the Bible, I find the exact scripture I needed at that moment. It feels like God is speaking directly to my situation. The more we read His Word, the more we begin to understand His heart.

Obedience Strengthens Our Relationship

A relationship with God is not only about hearing His Word—it is also about living it. When we obey God’s guidance, we show that we trust Him.

John 14:15 (KJV) says:

“If ye love me, keep my commandments.”

Obedience is connected to love. When we love God, we want to follow His ways.

Obedience does not mean we will always be perfect. We will still make mistakes and learn along the way. But when our hearts desire to follow God, He continues to guide us and help us grow. Each step of obedience strengthens our relationship with Him.

Moving Beyond Routine

Sometimes religion can become routine. People may go through the motions without truly connecting with God. We might attend church, sing songs, and listen to the message, but if our hearts are not engaged, we can miss what God is trying to show us.

Matthew 15:8 (KJV) says:

“This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.”

God is not looking for empty routines. He is looking for hearts that genuinely seek Him. When we approach God with sincerity, our faith becomes deeper and more meaningful.

Trusting God in Everyday Life

Building a relationship with God also means trusting Him in our everyday lives. It means inviting Him into our decisions, our plans, and our challenges.

Proverbs 3:5–6 (KJV) reminds us:

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

When we trust God with every part of our lives, we allow Him to guide us. We begin to see His hand working in ways we may not have noticed before. Trust grows stronger as our relationship with Him deepens.

Relationship Brings Peace

One of the greatest blessings of having a relationship with God is the peace that comes with it. When we know that God is guiding our steps, we do not have to carry every burden alone.

Isaiah 26:3 (KJV) says:

“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.”

That kind of peace does not come from the world. It comes from knowing that God is in control. Even when life feels uncertain, His presence gives comfort and reassurance.

Growing Closer Each Day

Building a relationship with God is a lifelong journey. Each day gives us another opportunity to grow closer to Him. Some days we may feel strong in our faith. On other days, we may struggle. But God remains patient and faithful through every season.

James 4:8 (KJV) says:

“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.”

When we take steps toward God, He meets us with love, grace, and guidance. The closer we grow to Him, the more we begin to reflect His love in our lives.

Reflection Questions

  1. Am I focusing more on routine religion or on building a personal relationship with God?
  2. How can I spend more intentional time with God through prayer and scripture?
  3. What steps can I take to trust God more in my daily life?
  4. In what ways can I strengthen my connection with God this week?

Take time to reflect on these questions and ask God to guide your heart.

  1. Spending time in God’s Word is where my relationship with Him grows deeper. It’s in those quiet moments-reading, reflecting, and listening-that I feel closets to Him. His Word speaks to my heart, and reminds me who I am in Him. The more I stay rooted in His Word, the more I understand His love, His voice, and His purpose for my life.
