Have you ever realized you were being ungrateful? Learn what the Bible says about thankfulness, appreciating God’s blessings, and developing a grateful heart.
Sometimes We Forget to Be Thankful
Many of us can honestly agree on this topic.
Sometimes…
We can be very ungrateful.
Not always on purpose…
But it happens.
There are moments when:
- Someone does something kind for us
- Someone gives us something
- God makes a way for us
And instead of being truly thankful…
We focus on:
👉 What we still don’t have.
Or sometimes we feel:
👉 “That’s not enough.”
And if we are honest…
There have probably been moments where:
- We forgot to say thank you
- We overlooked someone’s kindness
- We didn’t appreciate something until later
And that’s why sometimes I have to stop and say:
👉 “Lord, forgive me for not being thankful.”
It’s Easy to Focus on What’s Missing
This is something many people struggle with.
We live in a world where people constantly want:
- More money
- More success
- More opportunities
- More recognition
- More possessions
So instead of appreciating what we already have…
We focus on what’s still missing.
And after a while…
That mindset creates:
- Complaining
- Frustration
- Discontentment
Because nothing ever feels like enough.
Sometimes We Overlook Small Blessings
This is important too.
Not every blessing is huge or dramatic.
Some blessings are:
- Waking up another day
- Having food
- Having peace
- Having people who care
- Having the strength to keep going
But because those things become “normal” to us…
👉 We stop appreciating them.
And honestly…
Many people do not realize how blessed they are until something is gone.
What the Bible Says About Thankfulness
📖 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (KJV)
“In every thing give thanks…”
Not only when life feels perfect.
But in:
- Good seasons
- Difficult seasons
- Waiting seasons
- Uncertain seasons
God still deserves gratitude.
📖 Psalm 100:4 (KJV)
“Enter into his gates with thanksgiving…”
Thankfulness matters to God.
Because gratitude changes:
- Your attitude
- Your mindset
- Your perspective
God Has Already Done So Much for Us
When I really sit back and think…
God has done so much for me already.
He has:
- Protected me
- Made ways for me
- Opened doors for me
- Brought me through difficult situations
And honestly…
There were moments I still found myself:
👉 Complaining.
Or focusing more on:
👉 What I wanted next.
Instead of fully appreciating:
👉 What He had already done.
And I had to realize:
👉 God does not owe me anything.
But I owe Him:
- Gratitude
- Praise
- Appreciation
Because He has been too good to me.
Sometimes People Show Kindness, and We Still Aren’t Satisfied
This part really made me think.
There are times when:
- Someone tries to help us
- Someone gives from their heart
- Someone offers kindness
And instead of appreciating the effort…
We think:
👉 “That’s all?”
Or:
👉 “I expected more.”
And honestly…
That can hurt people.
Because someone may have given:
👉 The best they had.
And instead of gratitude…
They received ungratefulness.
Being Unthankful Can Affect Relationships Too
This doesn’t only affect our relationship with God.
It affects relationships with people, too.
Because when people constantly feel:
- Unappreciated
- Overlooked
- Taken for granted
It can become emotionally draining.
Everyone wants to feel appreciated sometimes.
A simple:
👉 “Thank you.”
Can mean a lot more than people realize.
Why Do People Become Ungrateful?
There are many reasons.
Sometimes people become ungrateful because:
- They compare themselves to others
- They focus too much on what they lack
- They feel entitled
- They overlook small blessings
And sometimes…
People become so focused on receiving more…
That they stop appreciating what they already have.
Comparison Can Destroy Gratitude
This connects deeply to comparison.
The more you compare your life to others…
The harder it becomes to appreciate your own blessings.
Because your focus stays on:
👉 What everybody else has.
Instead of:
👉 What God already gave you.
And comparison can make a blessed person feel empty.
What Happens When You Become Truly Thankful
When gratitude becomes part of your life:
- Your mindset changes
- Your peace increases
- Your heart softens
- Complaining decreases
Because thankful people begin noticing:
👉 God’s goodness everywhere.
Even in small things.
How to Become More Thankful
Let’s make this practical.
Because gratitude is something we must intentionally practice.
1. Stop Focusing Only on What You Don’t Have
This is the first step.
Instead of constantly saying:
- “I wish I had this.”
- “Why don’t I have that?”
Start noticing:
👉 What God has already provided.
Because there is always something to thank Him for.
2. Thank People More Often
A simple thank you matters.
When someone:
- Helps you
- Supports you
- Shows kindness
Take time to appreciate it.
Even small acts matter.
3. Remember Where God Brought You From
This helps me personally.
Whenever I feel frustrated…
I remind myself:
👉 God already brought me through things I once cried about.
And when I think about that…
Gratitude returns quickly.
4. Stop Acting Entitled
This is important.
Sometimes people act like:
👉 Blessings are owed to them.
But everything we have:
- Life
- Health
- Strength
- Opportunities
Comes from God’s grace.
Nothing is guaranteed.
5. Thank God Daily — Even for Small Things
Not only for:
- Big breakthroughs
- Major blessings
But also for:
- Peace
- Protection
- Strength
- Another day
Small blessings are still blessings.
Jesus Even Thanked God
This is powerful.
Even Jesus showed gratitude.
📖 John 6:11 (KJV)
“And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks…”
If Jesus gave thanks…
We should too.
Ungratefulness Can Blind You Spiritually
This is deeper than people realize.
When people constantly focus on:
👉 What’s missing…
They stop seeing:
👉 God’s goodness.
And eventually:
- Joy decreases
- Peace decreases
- Complaining increases
Because the heart becomes consumed with dissatisfaction.
What I Learned About Thankfulness
I learned:
- Gratitude changes perspective
- God has already done more than enough
- Small blessings matter too
- Complaining and ungratefulness steal peace
And I also learned:
👉 God deserves my thanks daily.
Not only when everything is going well.
God Is Still Good Even During Difficult Seasons
This is important.
Life will not always feel perfect.
But even during difficult seasons:
👉 God is still good.
Sometimes gratitude is not about:
👉 Having everything you want.
It’s about recognizing:
👉 God is still with you.
Final Thought: Don’t Forget to Say Thank You
So if you’ve been feeling frustrated lately…
Take a moment and think about:
👉 Everything God has already done for you.
Because sometimes we become so focused on:
👉 The next blessing…
That we forget to appreciate:
👉 The current ones.
Do not allow ungratefulness to harden your heart.
Be thankful:
- For life
- For growth
- For peace
- For lessons
- For God’s grace
Because He has already done more for us than we truly deserve.

Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Forgive me for the times I have been ungrateful or overlooked the many blessings You have already placed in my life. Help me to develop a thankful heart and to appreciate both the big and small things You do for me daily.
Teach me not to focus so much on what I still want that I forget everything You have already done. Help me to show gratitude toward You and toward others who show kindness and love.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Ty
Encouraged by Faith

Lord, forgive me for the times I’ve focused more on what I don’t have instead of appreciating everything You’ve already done for me. Thank You for waking me up, carrying me through hard days, and never giving up on me even when I fall short. I know I don’t say thank You enough for the little things, the blessings I overlook, and the prayers You’ve already answered. Help me to have a grateful heart, to stop complaining, and to recognize Your goodness in my life every day.
