Compassion is one of the most beautiful gifts God can give. Learn what the Bible says about compassion, how Jesus demonstrated it, and practical ways we can show compassion to others every day.
Compassion Is More Than Feeling Sorry for Someone
When many people hear the word compassion, they think it simply means feeling bad for someone.
But compassion is much deeper than that.
Compassion is not just noticing someone’s pain.
Compassion is caring enough to do something about it.
It is the ability to:
- Care about others
- Listen without judgment
- Show kindness
- Offer encouragement
- Pray for people
- Support someone during difficult seasons
Compassion is love in action.
And honestly, I believe compassion is one of the most beautiful gifts God can give a person.
I thank God for blessing me with a compassionate heart because I truly enjoy helping people, encouraging people, and letting them know they matter.
In a world where so many people feel overlooked, compassion can make a huge difference.
God Is Compassionate Toward Us
Before we can understand compassion, we must understand where compassion comes from.
Compassion starts with God.
📖 Psalm 145:8 (KJV)
“The Lord is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.”
Think about that for a moment.
God is full of compassion.
Every day He shows us:
- Mercy
- Grace
- Patience
- Love
Even when:
- We complain
- We make mistakes
- We fall short
God continues showing compassion toward us.
And because He shows compassion to us, we should show compassion to others.
Jesus Demonstrated Compassion Everywhere He Went
One thing I love about Jesus is that He never ignored people.
He noticed people.
He cared about people.
He stopped for people.
📖 Matthew 9:36 (KJV)
“But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them…”
Jesus did not only see crowds.
He saw people.
He saw:
- Their struggles
- Their burdens
- Their needs
And He responded with compassion.
That challenges us to ask ourselves:
👉 Do we truly see people?
Or do we just walk past them?
Not Everyone Has the Gift of Compassion
One thing I have learned is that compassion comes naturally to some people more than others.
Some people:
- Feel deeply
- Notice when someone is hurting
- Want to help
Others may struggle to understand what someone else is feeling.
That does not automatically make them bad people.
It simply means compassion may not come as naturally to them.
But regardless of whether compassion comes naturally or not, God calls all believers to grow in compassion.
📖 Colossians 3:12 (KJV)
“Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering.”
Notice Paul says:
👉 Put it on.
That means compassion is something we should intentionally practice.
Why Compassion Matters Today
Look around.
People are hurting.
Some people are carrying:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Grief
- Financial struggles
- Family problems
- Health concerns
And many people carry these burdens silently.
They smile.
They work.
They show up every day.
Yet they are struggling inside.
This is why compassion matters.
You never know what someone is carrying.
Compassion Makes People Feel Seen
One of the greatest things compassion does is make people feel seen.
Many people feel invisible.
They feel like:
- Nobody notices them
- Nobody understands them
- Nobody cares
But compassion changes that.
A simple:
- Phone call
- Text message
- Prayer
- Encouraging word
Can remind someone:
👉 “You matter.”
And honestly, that can mean more than we realize.
Let’s Make This Practical
Sometimes people hear messages about compassion and wonder:
“Okay, but how do I actually show compassion?”
Here are some practical ways.
1. Listen More Than You Speak
Many people do not need advice immediately.
Sometimes they simply need someone to listen.
Instead of always trying to fix the problem:
- Listen carefully
- Let them talk
- Allow them to express their feelings
Listening is one of the simplest acts of compassion.
2. Pray for People
One of the greatest ways we can show compassion is through prayer.
When someone is hurting:
- Pray for them
- Pray with them
- Pray even when they never ask
Prayer invites God into their situation.
3. Check on People
Sometimes a simple message saying:
“How are you doing today?”
Can mean everything.
People remember those moments.
Compassion often shows up through consistency.
4. Stop Judging So Quickly
This one is important.
Sometimes we judge people before understanding their situation.
Compassion asks:
👉 “What might they be going through?”
Instead of:
👉 “What’s wrong with them?”
That shift changes everything.
5. Offer Help When You Can
Sometimes compassion looks like:
- Bringing a meal
- Giving a ride
- Helping financially
- Offering support
Compassion is often practical.
Compassion Is Not Weakness
Some people mistake compassion for weakness.
I disagree completely.
Compassion requires strength.
It takes strength to:
- Forgive
- Be patient
- Love difficult people
- Show grace
Anyone can criticize.
Anyone can judge.
Anyone can walk away.
But compassion chooses love.
We Need More Compassion and Less Complaining
I can admit this.
Sometimes I complain.
Sometimes I get frustrated.
Sometimes I focus on what is wrong.
But then I stop and think about how good God has been.
And I find myself saying:
“Lord, forgive me.”
Because God has shown me compassion over and over again.
He continues:
- Blessing me
- Protecting me
- Providing for me
And if He keeps showing compassion to me, then I should be willing to show compassion to others.
Check Your Heart
This is something we should all do.
Ask yourself:
- Am I quick to judge?
- Am I willing to listen?
- Do I show grace?
- Do I encourage people?
- Do I genuinely care about others?
These questions help reveal the condition of our hearts.
Because compassion begins on the inside before it shows up on the outside.
Compassion Reflects the Heart of God
Every act of compassion reflects God.
When we:
- Show kindness
- Offer encouragement
- Pray for someone
- Extend grace
We are reflecting God’s love.
And that matters.
Because people may forget what we said.
But they often remember how we treated them.
Final Thought: Never Lose Your Compassion
The world can be cold.
People can be difficult.
Life can be frustrating.
But do not let those things harden your heart.
Keep your compassion.
Keep your kindness.
Keep your willingness to help others.
Because God can use your compassionate heart to touch lives in ways you may never fully understand.
You may never know how much your:
- Prayer
- Encouragement
- Kindness
- Support
Impacted someone.
But God knows.
And He sees every act of compassion done from a sincere heart.
So if God has blessed you with compassion, use it.
Show it.
Share it.
And allow Him to use that gift to bring hope, healing, and encouragement to others.

I’ve learned that compassion is a gift because it costs very little, yet it can have a lasting impact. We never truly know what battles people are facing behind closed doors. Compassion can make a big difference than we realize. Checking on someone is a simple way of showing that they matter. A text, a phone call, or a quick conversation can remind a person that they are not alone. Checking on people is more than a gesture-it’s a reminder that we are connected, that we matter to one another, and that no one should have to face life’s challenges feeling forgotten.
