A faith-filled devotional about releasing past pain, letting go of hurt, and trusting God to heal your heart so you can move forward in peace and freedom.
Releasing the Pain of the Past
Releasing the pain of the past is something many of us struggle with. Let’s be real—we all hold on to things. Things people said. Things people did. Situations that hurt us. Moments we wish never happened. Instead of releasing the pain, we carry it. We carry it for years. We carry it silently. We carry it like it’s just a part of who we are.
But let me ask you this—why carry something that is only holding you down? Why keep something that continues to hurt you? Why hold on to pain that God is asking you to release?
The Weight of Holding On
Holding on to past pain is heavy. Even if you don’t talk about it, it’s still there.
It shows up in your thoughts.
It shows up in your reactions.
It shows up in how you treat others.
It even shows up in your body.
There are people right now who are tired, stressed, and overwhelmed—not just because of what’s happening today, but because of what they never released from yesterday. Pain doesn’t just disappear because time passes. If it’s not released, it stays. Over time, it builds.
Why Didn’t You Say Something?
Sometimes we hold on to pain because we never addressed it. Something happened, and we stayed quiet.
We didn’t speak up.
We didn’t express how we felt.
We just held it in.
Now it’s been years… and that same pain is still there. But here’s the truth—you can’t go back and change what happened. But you can decide what you do with it now. You can either keep carrying it… Or you can release it.
Let It Go and Move Forward
There comes a point where you have to make a decision:
Am I going to keep holding on to this?
Or am I going to let it go?
Letting go doesn’t mean it didn’t hurt. Letting go doesn’t mean it didn’t matter. Letting go means you are choosing your peace over your pain.
Isaiah 43:18 (KJV) says:
“Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old.”
God is telling us not to stay stuck in what happened before. Because He has something new ahead. We can’t move forward if we are still holding on to what’s behind us.
Pain Can Affect More Than You Think
A lot of people don’t realize how much holding on to pain can affect them. You might be wondering: Why am I always stressed? Why am I tired all the time? Why do I feel heavy inside? Sometimes it’s not just life—it’s what you’re holding onto.
Unreleased pain can affect your:
• Mind
• Emotions
• Body
• Relationships
Proverbs 17:22 (KJV) says:
“A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.”
That means what’s going on inside of you can affect your whole life. That’s why it’s so important to release it.
Give It to God
One of the most important things I’ve learned is this: We don’t have to carry everything. God is there for a reason. He wants you to bring your pain to Him. He wants you to release it.
1 Peter 5:7 (KJV) says:
“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”
That means everything. Not some things. Not only the small things.
Everything.
The hurt.
The disappointment.
The anger.
The confusion.
Give it to God.
Forgiveness Is Part of the Process
Let’s be honest—forgiveness is not always easy. But it is necessary. Forgiveness is not about saying what someone did was okay. It’s about freeing yourself. When you forgive, you are no longer holding onto that pain.
Ephesians 4:31–32 (KJV) says:
“Let all bitterness… be put away from you… and be ye kind one to another… forgiving one another…”
Holding onto bitterness will only keep you stuck. Forgiveness brings freedom.
You Deserve Peace
You don’t have to live your life weighed down by your past. You don’t have to carry pain forever. You don’t have to keep reliving what hurt you. God wants you to have peace.
John 14:27 (KJV) says:
“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you…”
That peace is for you. You have to be willing to release what’s blocking it.
Healing Takes Time—but It Starts With a Decision
Healing doesn’t happen overnight. It does start with a decision.
A decision to say:
“I’m not carrying this anymore.”
“I’m giving this to God.”
“I’m choosing peace.”
Every day you wake up, you have another chance to release it again. Because sometimes healing is a process.
Stop Carrying What God Told You to Release
I want to say this clearly:
Stop carrying things you don’t need. Some of us are holding onto things God already told us to let go of. We keep picking it back up. We keep replaying it. We keep talking about it.
But God is saying:
“Give it to me.”
Let Him handle it.
Let Him direct you.
Let Him heal you.
What Happens When You Finally Let Go
When you release the pain of the past, something changes.
You feel lighter.
You feel freer.
You feel at peace.
You’re not weighed down anymore. You’re not stuck anymore. You can finally move forward. One day, you’ll look back and realize… That pain doesn’t have control over you anymore.
Reflection Questions
1. What pain from your past are you still holding onto?
2. Is there something you need to release to God today?
3. What would your life look like if you truly let it go?

Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
I come to You with everything I’ve been holding onto. The pain, the hurt, the memories that I haven’t released. Help me to let it go. Teach me how to give it to You completely. Heal my heart, renew my mind, and fill me with Your peace. I don’t want to carry this anymore. I trust You to handle what I cannot.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Ty
