There is one thing I have learned on my journey with God — spiritual growth does not happen the same way in every season. Life changes, situations change, and even we change as we walk with Him. Some seasons feel joyful and peaceful, while others feel heavy, confusing, or challenging. But one truth remains: every season has a purpose, and God uses each one to grow us spiritually.
Sometimes we think growth only happens during the good moments — when prayers are answered quickly, when life feels stable, or when everything seems to be falling into place. But I have discovered that some of the deepest spiritual growth happens during the seasons we never would have chosen for ourselves. Growing spiritually means learning to trust God in every season, not just the easy ones.
Seasons of Waiting Teach Us Trust
There are seasons when it feels like nothing is moving. You pray, you wait, and you wonder when things will change. Waiting seasons can feel uncomfortable because we naturally want progress, answers, and clarity. But God often uses waiting to teach us trust. Waiting stretches our faith because we cannot rely on what we see — we must rely on who God is.
Isaiah 40:31 (KJV) says, “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength…”
Waiting is not wasted time. It is preparation time. God is strengthening your patience, shaping your character, and aligning things behind the scenes. During these seasons, we learn to trust His timing instead of trying to control our own. I have learned that when God asks us to wait, it is not because He has forgotten us — it is because He is preparing us for something greater.
Seasons of Growth Require Change
Growth is beautiful, but it is not always comfortable. Sometimes spiritual growth means letting go of old habits, old mindsets, or even relationships that no longer align with where God is taking you. There are moments when God begins shifting your heart, and you realize you cannot stay the same person you used to be.
Romans 12:2 (KJV) reminds us, “Be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
Transformation requires surrender. It means allowing God to renew how you think, how you respond, and how you see yourself. Growth seasons may feel challenging because God is stretching you beyond what feels familiar. But every time you choose obedience, you grow stronger spiritually.
Seasons of Struggle Deepen Your Faith
Let’s be honest — some seasons are hard. You may face disappointment, loss, confusion, or situations you never expected. These moments can feel overwhelming, but they also become opportunities for deeper spiritual growth. Struggle teaches us how to rely on God when we have nothing else to lean on.
James 1:2–3 (KJV) says, “Count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.”
Hard seasons develop endurance. They teach us resilience. They help us understand that our strength does not come from ourselves but from God. I have learned that even when life feels heavy, God is still working behind the scenes. He is strengthening your roots so that your faith remains firm even during storms.
Seasons of Peace Remind Us to Rest
Not every season is a struggle. There are also seasons of peace — moments when life feels calm and stable. Sometimes we overlook these seasons because we are so used to preparing for the next challenge. But peaceful seasons are gifts from God. They are opportunities to rest, reflect, and recharge spiritually.
Psalm 23:2–3 (KJV) says, “He maketh me to lie down in green pastures… He restoreth my soul.”
Rest is not laziness; it is restoration. During peaceful seasons, God renews your strength and prepares you for future assignments. These moments allow you to deepen your relationship with Him without distraction. Enjoy the seasons of peace without feeling guilty. They are part of your spiritual journey, too.
Seasons of Serving Grow Your Heart
Sometimes God places us in seasons where we are called to serve others more than usual. This might look like helping people, encouraging others, or stepping into responsibilities you did not expect. Serving seasons teach humility, compassion, and love.
Galatians 5:13 (KJV) says, “By love serve one another.”
Serving others is not always easy, especially when you feel tired or unappreciated. But God uses these seasons to shape your character and strengthen your spiritual maturity. I have learned that when we serve with the right heart — not for recognition but for God — our faith grows in ways we never imagined.
Seasons of Transition Build Faith
Transitions can feel uncertain. New beginnings, changes in direction, or unexpected shifts can leave you feeling unsure about what comes next. But transitions are often where God does some of His greatest work. When you step into a new season, you may not see the full picture yet. But God is guiding every step.
Proverbs 3:5–6 (KJV) reminds us, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart… and he shall direct thy paths.”
Transitions require trust. They require letting go of control and allowing God to lead you forward. Even when you cannot see the outcome, trust that God knows where He is taking you.
Every Season Has Purpose
One of the most important lessons I have learned is that no season is wasted. Every season — waiting, growing, struggling, resting, serving, or transitioning — is shaping you into the person God created you to be. Sometimes we wish we could skip certain seasons, but those are often the very moments that grow us the most.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 (KJV) says, “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.”
God knows exactly what you need and when you need it. Even when you do not understand the season you are in, trust that He is using it to prepare you for what is ahead.
Encouragement for Your Journey
If you feel like your life is shifting or you are in a season that feels unfamiliar, take heart. Spiritual growth does not always look the same. Sometimes it looks like praying when you feel tired. Sometimes it looks like trusting when you feel uncertain. Sometimes it looks like resting when you feel pressured to keep moving.
Wherever you are right now, God is with you.
He is growing you.
He is guiding you.
And He is preparing you for something greater.
