Don’t Be Lukewarm: Choose God Wholeheartedly

There comes a point in your walk with God where you have to stop playing with it.

I’m just going to say it like that.

Because a lot of us—if we’re honest—have been there before. Saying we love God, saying we’re living for Him, but when you really look at how we’re moving… it doesn’t fully match.

We turn it on when it’s convenient.

We turn it off when it’s uncomfortable.

And somewhere in between, we try to convince ourselves that it’s okay.

But deep down… we know.

God knows, too.

I had to sit with this myself.

Because it’s easy to say, “I’m living for Christ.”
It’s easy to post it.
It’s easy to say it around the right people.

But living it? Fully?

That’s different.

That means it shows in your choices.
In your conversations.
In how you respond when nobody is watching.
In what you allow and what you walk away from.

That’s when it becomes real.

Let’s talk about what lukewarm really means.

A lukewarm Christian is someone whose faith is not fully committed. It’s not hot, it’s not cold—it’s right in the middle. There’s no fire, no real consistency, no full surrender.

And if we’re being honest, that’s where a lot of people are.

Going to church… but not applying the Word.
Reading the Bible… but still living however they want.
Saying “God first”… but making decisions without Him.

That’s not judgment—that’s reality.

And the reason it happens is that people are unsure.

They’re stuck between two places.

Trying to hold on to God…
while still holding on to the world.

But here’s the truth:

You can’t live in both.

At some point, you have to decide.

That decision is not always easy.

Because choosing God fully means letting go of some things.

Some habits.
Some environments.
Some ways of thinking.
Sometimes even people.

And that’s where many people hesitate.

The Bible speaks clearly about this in Revelation 3:15–16 (KJV):

“I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot… because thou art lukewarm… I will spue thee out of my mouth.”

That scripture is strong. Not gentle. Not soft. Strong. Because God is not looking for a halfway commitment. He’s not looking for part-time faith. He’s not looking for people who only choose Him when it’s convenient. He wants all of you.

I had to check myself on that. Because it’s easy to say, “I’m not lukewarm.” Then God will show you areas where you’re still holding back. Areas where you’re still picking and choosing. Areas where you’re still trying to stay comfortable. That’s where growth begins.

Living for Christ is not something you turn on and off.

It’s not something you do just on Sundays.

It’s not something you pick up when life gets hard and drop when things feel good.

It’s a lifestyle.

Luke 9:23 (KJV) says:

“If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”

Daily.

Not sometimes.
Not when you feel like it.
Daily.

That means every day you are choosing Him.

Even when it’s hard.
Even when you don’t feel like it.
Even when nobody else understands.

Let me say something real: Being lukewarm might feel easier in the moment. Because you don’t have to fully commit. You don’t have to fully let go. You can still do what you want… and still say you believe. But that kind of life doesn’t bring real peace. It brings confusion, because one day you’re in… the next day you’re out. One moment you’re focused… the next moment you’re distracted. And your spirit feels it.

I’ve learned that when you fully give your life to God, something shifts.

Not everything around you changes overnight.

But something inside of you does.

Your mindset changes.
Your priorities change.
Your convictions get stronger.

You start to notice things you used to ignore.

You start to feel uncomfortable doing things you used to be okay with.

That’s not you losing anything.

That’s you growing.

And growth doesn’t always feel good.

Sometimes it feels like separation.

Sometimes it feels like discomfort.

Sometimes it feels like you don’t fit where you used to fit.

But that’s because you’re not the same anymore.

The danger of being lukewarm is that it keeps you stuck.

You’re not fully in.

But you’re not fully out either.

You’re just… there.

And that’s not where God wants you.

He wants you all in.

He wants your heart.
Your mind.
Your actions.
Your life.

Matthew 6:24 (KJV) says:

“No man can serve two masters…”

That right there settles it.

You can’t serve both.

You can’t live one way and claim another.

Eventually, one will take over.

So the real question becomes:

What side are you choosing?

Not just with your words.

But with your life.

I’m not saying you have to be perfect. None of us is.

But there’s a difference between struggling and settling.

Struggling means you’re trying.
You’re growing.
You’re learning.

Settling means you’ve gotten comfortable. God will always call you out of that comfort.

If you say you’re living for Christ—live it.

Not halfway.

Not sometimes.

Not when it’s easy.

Live it all the way.

God knows when you’re real. He knows when you’re serious. He knows when you’re just going through the motions.

I don’t know about you…

But I don’t want to live a life where I’m just going through the motions. I want to be real about my walk. I want my life to match what I say. I want my actions to reflect who I belong to.

So if you’ve been in that middle place…

If you’ve been going back and forth…

If you’ve been unsure…

Let this be your moment to decide.

Not tomorrow.

Not later.

Now.

Joshua 24:15 (KJV) says:

“Choose you this day whom ye will serve…”

Choose.

That means it’s a decision.

And once you decide, stand on it.

Because when you choose God fully, you don’t lose.

You gain.

You gain peace.
You gain clarity.
You gain direction.
You gain strength you didn’t know you had.

So don’t be lukewarm. Don’t stay in the middle. Don’t live halfway. Be all in. Be committed. Be real. Be for God wholeheartedly.

Reflection Questions

1. Am I truly living for God, or just saying that I am?

2. What areas of my life am I still holding back from God?

3. What is one step I can take today to fully commit my walk with Him?

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Help me not to be lukewarm in my walk with You. Show me the areas where I need to grow and give me the strength to fully commit my life to You. I don’t want to live halfway—I want to live for You wholeheartedly. Remove anything in me that is holding me back and help my life reflect You in everything I do.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Blessings,
Ty 💙
