Carry Your Cross: Following Christ With Commitment and Surrender

Introduction

When Jesus told us to carry our cross, He wasn’t talking about something comfortable or easy. He was showing us what it truly means to follow Him. Carrying your cross means more than just believing in Jesus — it means choosing to follow Him with commitment, obedience, and surrender.

Many people say they believe in God, but following Him requires something deeper. It requires a decision of the heart. It requires us to trust Him enough to let go of the things that pull us away from Him.

When Jesus talked about taking up our cross, He was showing us that following Him requires sacrifice. It means I have to deny myself, let go of things that distract me spiritually, and choose obedience even when it is not the easiest path.

Carrying your cross is not about punishment. It is about purpose. It is about choosing God’s will over our own and trusting that His plan for our lives is always better.

Understanding What It Means to Carry Your Cross

When Jesus spoke about carrying the cross, He was teaching His followers something powerful.

Luke 9:23 (KJV) says:

“And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”

Notice the word daily. Carrying your cross is not something we do once. It is something we choose every single day.

For me, this means waking up and deciding again that I want to follow Christ. Not just when life feels peaceful, and everything is going well, but even during the moments when life feels challenging.

Sometimes we want faith without sacrifice, but Jesus showed us that true faith requires commitment. Carrying our cross means letting go of pride, selfishness, and the things that keep us from growing spiritually. It is a daily reminder that my life belongs to God.

Denying Yourself and Choosing God’s Will

One of the hardest parts of carrying our cross is learning how to deny ourselves.

Matthew 16:24 (KJV) says:

“Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.”

Denying yourself does not mean losing who you are. It means allowing God to shape who you are becoming. Sometimes denying ourselves means walking away from things we know are not good for us. Other times it means choosing patience when we want to react, or choosing forgiveness when our emotions say otherwise. There are moments when our own plans seem easier, but following God’s direction brings a deeper peace.

When we deny ourselves and follow Him, we are saying, “Lord, I trust Your plan more than my own.” That kind of trust strengthens our faith.

Carrying Your Cross in Difficult Seasons

Carrying your cross does not mean life will always be easy. In fact, some seasons may feel heavier than others. Sometimes carrying your cross looks like standing for what is right, even when others disagree with you. Sometimes it means staying patient while waiting for God to move in a situation. Other times it means continuing to love people, forgive others, and stay faithful even when things feel difficult.

Galatians 6:9 (KJV) reminds us:

“And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”

There will be moments when following Christ feels challenging. There will be moments when we question if we are strong enough to keep going. But God never asks us to carry our cross alone. He walks with us every step of the way. Even when the journey feels heavy, His strength carries us forward.

The Cross Leads to Growth

One thing I have learned is that spiritual growth often happens through surrender. Carrying our cross teaches us patience. It teaches us humility. It teaches us how to trust God even when we do not fully understand what He is doing.

James 1:3–4 (KJV) says:

“Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.”

Trials and challenges are not meant to break us. God can use them to shape us into stronger, wiser people. Sometimes the very things that feel heavy in our lives are the things God uses to grow our faith the most. When we surrender those struggles to Him, we begin to see how He is working through them.

Following the Example of Jesus

When we talk about carrying our cross, we cannot forget that Jesus carried His first. Jesus endured pain, rejection, and suffering so that we could have life. His sacrifice showed us what true love and obedience look like.

Hebrews 12:2 (KJV) says:

“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross…”

Jesus endured the cross because He understood the purpose behind it. When we carry our cross, we are following in His footsteps. We are choosing to trust God even when we cannot see the full picture. That kind of faith strengthens our relationship with Him.

Choosing Christ Every Day

Carrying your cross is not just about big moments in life. It shows up in everyday choices. It shows up in how we treat people. It shows up in how we respond when life feels frustrating. It shows up in how we remain faithful even when others may not understand our faith. Every day we have the opportunity to choose Christ again.

Joshua 24:15 (KJV) reminds us:

“Choose you this day whom ye will serve…”

Following Christ is a daily decision. It is choosing faith over fear, obedience over comfort, and trust over doubt. For me, carrying my cross means trusting that what God is doing in my life is greater than the struggles I face. And when I carry my cross, I remember that I am walking in the footsteps of the One who carried His for me.
