Meta Description:
A faith-filled devotional about growing together spiritually as a married couple, putting God first in marriage, and building a strong foundation through personal faith, prayer, and trust in God.
Growing together spiritually as a married couple is something I personally can’t speak on from experience, because I’m not married. But it is something I’ve seen, something I believe in, and something I admire deeply.
I’ve seen married couples who truly walk with God together. I’ve watched how their faith shows up in their marriage, how they pray together, support one another, and lean on God during both good times and hard times. And I believe it is a beautiful thing to have.
Maybe one day God will bless me with that kind of relationship, too. But until then, I can still speak on what I’ve observed, what I’ve learned through God’s Word, and what I believe God desires for marriage.
🌿 A Strong Marriage Starts With a Strong Personal Relationship With God
One thing I strongly believe is this: before two people can grow together spiritually, they must first have a personal relationship with God individually.
A husband can’t depend on his wife’s faith to carry him, and a wife can’t depend on her husband’s faith to do the same. Each person has to know God for themselves.
When both individuals are rooted in God personally, coming together in marriage creates something stronger.
“Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it.”
— Psalm 127:1 (KJV)
If God isn’t the foundation, everything else becomes shaky. But when God is first, the marriage has something solid to stand on.
🌿 Putting God First in Marriage
God desires to be first in marriage — not second, not last, and not only called on during problems.
When God is first:
- Decisions are made with prayer
- Communication is handled with love
- Forgiveness comes easier
- Pride doesn’t lead
- Grace flows more freely
Putting God first doesn’t mean the marriage will be perfect. It means the marriage will be covered.
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”
— Proverbs 3:5 (KJV)
When couples trust God instead of leaning on emotions, opinions, or pride, growth begins.
🌿 Growing Together Takes Intention
Growing together spiritually doesn’t happen automatically just because two people are married. It takes intention, effort, and a willingness to grow.
It looks like:
- Praying together
- Reading God’s Word together
- Encouraging one another spiritually
- Talking about faith, not just life
- Choosing unity over being right
I’ve seen couples grow stronger when they invite God into their everyday moments, not just Sunday mornings.
🌿 There Will Be Hard Times — And That’s Okay
One thing I know for sure is that marriage will not always be easy. There will be disagreements, misunderstandings, and seasons where things feel heavy.
But when God is in the marriage, couples don’t have to face those moments alone.
“And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.”
— Ecclesiastes 4:12 (KJV)
That third cord — God — is what holds everything together when things feel like they might fall apart.
🌿 Spiritual Growth Strengthens Love
When couples grow spiritually together, love deepens. It becomes less about feelings and more about commitment, patience, and understanding.
Spiritual growth teaches couples how to:
- Love selflessly
- Speak kindly
- Forgive fully
- Serve one another
- Grow through challenges
Love rooted in God doesn’t disappear when emotions change.
🌿 Grace Is Necessary in Marriage
No one is perfect. Mistakes will happen. Words will be said that need to be forgiven. That’s why grace is so important.
Growing spiritually together means learning how to extend grace the same way God extends grace to us.
“Be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another.”
— Ephesians 4:32 (KJV)
Grace keeps a marriage from becoming hardened.
🌿 Unity Over Ego
One thing I’ve noticed is that marriages grow stronger when couples choose unity over ego. When both people are willing to humble themselves before God, pride loses its power.
Spiritual growth teaches couples how to:
- Listen instead of reacting
- Pray instead of arguing
- Seek peace instead of winning
God honors humility.
🌿 God Uses Marriage to Grow Us
Marriage is not just about companionship — it’s also about growth. God uses marriage to shape hearts, strengthen character, and teach patience, love, and humility.
When couples grow spiritually together, they allow God to work on them individually and together.
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God.”
— Romans 8:28 (KJV)
Even difficult moments can be used for growth when God is involved.
🌿 A Marriage That Honors God Is a Witness
I’ve seen how a marriage rooted in God can be a witness to others. People notice when couples treat each other with respect, pray together, and stay united through challenges.
A God-centered marriage reflects His love greatly.

đź“– Devotional Reflection
Growing together spiritually begins with choosing God daily. When couples seek Him first, they grow in love, patience, and understanding. A marriage rooted in faith may still face storms, but it will never face them alone.
🙏 Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of marriage and the opportunity to grow spiritually together. Help married couples keep you at the center of their relationship. Teach them to love with patience, grace, and humility. Strengthen their faith, guide their decisions, and help them grow together through every season. For those still waiting, prepare their hearts and deepen their relationship with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
