How God Speaks in Stillness

I love how, when I sit still and ask God to clear my mind and help me focus on Him, everything begins to slow down. In those moments of stillness, I can truly think about what I want to write for this blog—or better yet, what God wants me to write. Sometimes I may already have something in mind, but then God steps in and gives me something so much better.

I’ve learned that when God places something on my heart, it’s usually something I need in that moment or something someone else may need to hear. I can always come back and write what I originally planned, but when God speaks, I don’t want to ignore Him. Taking the time to sit with Him, listen, and allow Him to guide me has been one of the best decisions I’ve made.

God Often Speaks in Stillness

We live in a noisy world. There is always something competing for our attention—phones, responsibilities, conversations, and worries. With all of that noise, it can be hard to hear God clearly. But I’ve come to understand that God often speaks in stillness, not in noise.

“And after the fire a still small voice.”
1 Kings 19:12 (KJV)

This scripture reminds me that God’s voice is gentle. It’s not forced or loud. If we are constantly rushing or distracted, we may miss what He is trying to tell us. Stillness creates space for God to speak.

Slowing Down to Focus on God

When I intentionally slow down and ask God to clear my mind, I feel peace come over me. Stillness helps me focus on Him instead of everything else going on around me. It allows me to hear His guidance more clearly and reminds me that I don’t have to figure everything out on my own.

Stillness doesn’t mean doing nothing. It means being present. It means sitting with God, listening, and trusting that He will lead the way. When I give God my attention, He gives me direction, clarity, and peace.

“Be still, and know that I am God.”
Psalm 46:10 (KJV)

When God Redirects Your Plans

There are times when I sit down ready to write about one thing, and God gently redirects me. He places something else on my heart—something deeper, something more meaningful. At first, I may not understand why, but later I realize that the message was exactly what was needed.

God knows what we need before we do. He knows what someone reading this blog may need to hear. When we allow Him to guide us, the message becomes bigger than us—it becomes a blessing for others.

Stillness Brings Peace

Stillness is not just about hearing God—it also brings peace to our souls. When we quiet our hearts and minds, we allow God to calm us. In stillness, worry fades, fear quiets, and peace settles in.

“For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace.”
1 Corinthians 14:33 (KJV)

If something brings confusion or anxiety, it’s often a sign that we need to pause and seek God again. His voice brings peace, reassurance, and direction.

Creating Time for Stillness

Stillness doesn’t just happen—we have to make time for it. That may mean waking up a little earlier, turning off distractions, or sitting quietly with God before the day gets busy. It could be through prayer, reading His Word, listening to gospel music, journaling, or simply sitting in silence.

Even a few minutes of stillness can make a big difference. Those quiet moments help reset our minds and refocus our hearts on what truly matters.

Trusting God’s Guidance

When God speaks in stillness, we have to trust what He reveals. Sometimes it’s encouragement. Sometimes it’s direction. At other times, it’s a reminder to wait. Stillness teaches us patience and strengthens our trust in God.

I’ve learned that God doesn’t rush us. He leads us gently, step by step. When we slow down and listen, we can move forward with confidence, knowing He is guiding us.

Reflection Questions

  1. Do you make time to be still before God?
  2. What distractions make it hard for you to hear Him?
  3. How has God spoken to you in quiet moments?

Closing Prayer
