Meta Description

Prayer is an important part of our relationship with God, but communication is a two-way street. Learn why listening to God is just as important as talking to Him and how to recognize His guidance in your daily life.

Are You Listening to God or Just Talking to Him?

Prayer is something many of us do every day.

We pray when we wake up.

We pray before meals.

We pray before going to bed.

We pray when life is going well.

And we definitely pray when life becomes difficult.

Prayer is one of the greatest gifts God has given us because it allows us to communicate directly with Him.

But there is a question I think many of us need to ask ourselves:

Are we listening to God, or are we just talking to Him?

If I am being honest, there have been times in my life when my prayers felt more like a list of requests.

I would tell God what I needed.

Tell Him what I wanted.

Tell Him what I was worried about.

Tell Him what I hoped would happen.

And then I would move on with my day.

I was talking.

But I was not always listening.

Over time, I began to realize that prayer is not supposed to be a one-sided conversation.

God wants us to talk to Him.

But He also wants us to listen.

Communication Is a Two-Way Street

Think about any healthy relationship.

If one person does all the talking and the other person never gets a chance to speak, that relationship will struggle.

Communication works best when both people are listening.

The same is true in our relationship with God.

Many of us are good at bringing our requests to Him.

We are good at asking for help.

We are good at asking for guidance.

We are good at asking for blessings.

But are we taking time to listen for His direction?

Are we slowing down long enough to hear what He may be trying to show us?

Sometimes we spend so much time talking that we miss what God is saying.

God Speaks in Different Ways

One reason people struggle with listening to God is that they expect Him to speak in a dramatic way every time.

They expect something loud.

Something obvious.

Something impossible to miss.

But many times God speaks quietly.

He may speak through:

  • His Word
  • Prayer
  • Wise counsel
  • Circumstances
  • Conviction from the Holy Spirit
  • A sermon
  • A devotional
  • A conversation

God is always able to communicate with His people.

The question is whether we are paying attention.

๐Ÿ“– John 10:27 (KJV)

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”

God’s people can recognize His voice when they stay close to Him.

Sometimes We Only Want God’s Approval

If I am being honest, there have been times when I prayed about something even though I had already made up my mind.

I was not really looking for direction.

I was looking for confirmation.

I wanted God to approve what I had already decided.

I think many of us have done that before.

We pray.

But we are not open to changing our minds.

We ask God what we should do.

But we already know what we want to do.

Listening requires humility.

Listening means being willing to hear God’s answer even when it is different from our own plans.

That is not always easy.

But it is necessary.

Listening Requires Quiet Time

One challenge many of us face is that life is noisy.

There is always something competing for our attention.

Phones.

Television.

Social media.

Work.

Responsibilities.

Schedules.

The noise never seems to stop.

Because of that, it becomes difficult to hear God’s voice.

Sometimes we need to step away from the noise.

Sometimes we need quiet moments with God.

Moments where we are not asking for anything.

Moments where we simply sit in His presence.

Moments where we allow Him to speak through His Word and through the Holy Spirit.

Those quiet moments often become some of the most meaningful moments in our relationship with Him.

God’s Answers Are Not Always What We Want

One thing I have learned is that listening becomes difficult when God’s answer is not the one we wanted.

Sometimes God says:

Wait.

Sometimes He says:

Not yet.

Sometimes He closes a door.

Sometimes, He redirects our plans.

Sometimes, He reveals something we were not expecting.

Those answers can be challenging.

But God’s wisdom is always greater than ours.

There have been times when I did not understand why God was leading me a certain way.

But looking back, I can see His hand in it.

I can see how He was protecting me.

I can see how He was preparing me.

I can see how He was guiding me toward something better.

That is why listening matters.

Listening Can Protect Us

Many times God tries to warn us before problems arise.

He may place something in our spirit that does not feel right.

He may use wise people to speak into our lives.

He may bring Scripture to our attention.

He may repeatedly get our attention about a certain issue.

But if we are not listening, we may miss it.

I believe many situations could be avoided if we listened more carefully to God’s guidance.

Not because we are perfect.

But because God sees things we cannot see.

He knows what is ahead.

And He desires what is best for us.

Let’s Make This Practical

If you want to become better at listening to God, here are a few practical things that can help.

1. Spend Time in God’s Word

The Bible is one of the primary ways God speaks to His people.

The more you read Scripture, the more familiar you become with His character and His voice.

2. Slow Down

Many of us are moving so fast that we never stop long enough to listen.

Take time to slow down.

Take time to pray.

Take time to reflect.

3. Remove Distractions

Create moments where you can focus completely on God.

Turn off the television.

Put down the phone.

Step away from the noise.

4. Ask God to Speak

Sometimes we need to simply ask.

Ask God for wisdom.

Ask Him for guidance.

Ask Him to help you recognize His voice.

๐Ÿ“– James 1:5 (KJV)

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God…”

God is willing to give wisdom to those who seek Him.

5. Be Willing to Obey

Listening means very little if we ignore what God is showing us.

Part of hearing God is being willing to follow His direction.

Even when it is difficult.

Even when it requires faith.

Obedience Follows Listening

One thing I have learned is that hearing God and obeying God go together.

It is not enough to hear His voice.

We must also respond.

Many times, we pray for direction.

God provides direction.

Then we hesitate because His answer requires trust.

But obedience is where growth happens.

Obedience is where faith develops.

Obedience is where we begin seeing God’s plans unfold.

The More Time You Spend With God, the Easier It Becomes

Think about the people closest to you.

You recognize their voice because you spend time with them.

The same is true with God.

The more time you spend with Him, the easier it becomes to recognize His guidance.

You begin noticing when He is leading you.

You begin recognizing His conviction.

You begin to understand His direction.

That relationship develops over time.

The key is consistency.

Keep praying.

Keep reading Scripture.

Keep seeking Him.

The more time you spend with God, the more familiar His voice becomes.

Final Thought: Make Time to Listen

If there is one thing I hope people take away from this, it is this:

Do not let your prayer life become one-sided.

Keep talking to God.

Bring Him your concerns.

Bring Him your fears.

Bring Him your hopes and dreams.

But do not stop there.

Make time to listen.

Make time to sit quietly in His presence.

Make time to read His Word.

Make time to seek His guidance.

Because sometimes the answer we are praying for is found when we stop talking long enough to listen.

God still speaks.

God still guides.

God still directs His people.

The question is:

Are we listening?

Reflection Questions

  • Do I spend more time talking to God than listening to Him?
  • What distractions may be keeping me from hearing God’s guidance?
  • Am I willing to obey when God directs me?
  • How can I create more quiet time with God this week?

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for loving me and for always being willing to hear my prayers. Help me not only speak to You but also listen to You. Teach me to recognize Your voice and give me the wisdom to follow Your guidance.

Help me remove distractions that keep me from spending time with You. Give me a heart that is willing to obey even when Your direction is different from my own plans.

Thank You for speaking through Your Word, Your Spirit, and the people You place in my life. Help me grow closer to You each day and become more attentive to Your leading.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

With Love,

Ty ๐Ÿค
