Meta Description

Patience and self-control are not always easy, but they are necessary for spiritual growth. Learn how trusting God’s timing and controlling your reactions can bring peace, wisdom, and maturity to your life.

Patience and Self-Control

If I am being honest, patience and self-control can be difficult.

I think most of us struggle with one or both at some point.

We want things to happen right now.

We want answers right now.

We want God to move right now.

And when things do not happen according to our schedule, we become frustrated.

I know I have felt that way before.

There were times when I prayed about something and wanted an answer immediately.

There were times when I wanted God to open a door right away.

There were times when I wanted things to move faster than they were moving.

But one thing I have learned is that God’s timing is different from ours.

And if we are going to walk with Him, we must learn patience and self-control.

Not because it is easy.

But because it is necessary.

We Live in a World That Wants Everything Fast

Think about how quickly we can get things today.

We can order food and have it delivered.

We can shop online and have items shipped quickly.

We can send a text message and get a response almost instantly.

Everything around us encourages speed.

Because of that, we sometimes expect God to work the same way.

We pray today and want the answer tomorrow.

We ask God for direction and expect immediate clarity.

We ask Him to change a situation and want it fixed instantly.

But God is not rushed.

He is never late.

And He is never early.

He works according to His perfect timing.

That is where patience comes in.

Patience Is Trusting God While You Wait

Many people think patience means sitting around doing nothing.

But patience is much more than that.

Patience is trusting God while you wait.

Patience is believing God is working even when you cannot see it.

Patience is continuing to pray even when the answer has not arrived.

Patience is choosing faith over frustration.

That is not always easy.

Especially when you feel ready.

Especially when you think the time is right.

Especially when you do not understand why things are taking so long.

But God sees things we do not see.

He knows things we do not know.

And He understands the full picture.

Sometimes God Is Working on Us

One thing I have realized is that while we are waiting on God, God is often working on us.

We think we are waiting for the blessing.

But God may be preparing us for the blessing.

He may be teaching us:

  • Patience
  • Humility
  • Wisdom
  • Trust
  • Dependence on Him

Sometimes we are so focused on receiving what we asked for that we miss what God is trying to teach us during the process.

The waiting season is often where growth happens.

Waiting Is Not My Favorite Thing

If I am being honest, waiting has never been one of my favorite things to do.

I like seeing progress.

I like seeing movement.

I like knowing what is going to happen next.

There have been times when I prayed about something and wanted God to answer right away. I thought I was ready. I thought the timing was right. I thought everything should move faster than it was moving.

But looking back, I can see that God knew exactly what He was doing.

What felt like a delay to me was often God preparing me for what was ahead.

There were lessons I needed to learn.

There was growth that needed to take place.

There were things God wanted me to understand before He opened certain doors.

At the time, I did not always understand it.

But now I can see that some of the things I prayed for would not have benefited me if I had received them too soon.

That is why I continue learning to trust God’s timing, even when it does not match my own.

📖 Ecclesiastes 3:1 (KJV)

“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.”

God has a season and a purpose for everything.

Sometimes our frustration comes from wanting something in a different season than the one God has chosen.

But when we trust His timing, we begin to understand that He is never late and never early.

He is always right on time.

Self-Control Is Just as Important

Patience and self-control go together.

Because while patience helps us wait, self-control helps us respond correctly during the waiting.

Self-control affects:

  • What we say
  • What we do
  • How we react
  • How we handle frustration

Without self-control, we can create problems that never needed to exist.

How many times have we:

  • Spoken too quickly?
  • Reacted emotionally?
  • Decided out of frustration?
  • Said something we later regretted?

I know I have.

And that is why self-control is so important.

Responding Instead of Reacting

One lesson God continues teaching me is to respond instead of react.

There is a difference.

Reacting usually comes from emotions.

Responding comes from wisdom.

When something happens that we do not like, our first reaction may be:

  • Anger
  • Frustration
  • Fear
  • Anxiety

But self-control allows us to pause.

It allows us to pray.

It allows us to think before we speak.

And many times, that pause can prevent a lot of unnecessary problems.

📖 Proverbs 29:11 (KJV)

“A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards.”

That scripture reminds us that wisdom knows when to speak and when to wait.

Patience Prevents Us From Getting Ahead of God

One thing many of us struggle with is getting ahead of God.

We become tired of waiting.

We become impatient.

And then we start trying to make things happen ourselves.

We force doors open.

We rush into relationships.

We make decisions without praying.

We move before God says move.

And later, we realize we should have waited.

Patience protects us from unnecessary mistakes.

Patience reminds us that God’s timing is worth trusting.

Let’s Make This Practical

If patience and self-control are areas you struggle with, here are a few practical things that can help.

1. Pray Before You React

When something upsets you, stop and pray first.

Even if it is only for a few moments.

Prayer helps calm emotions and brings clarity.

2. Give Yourself Time

Not every decision needs an immediate answer.

Sometimes it is okay to step back and think.

Patience often creates room for wisdom.

3. Stay Focused on What God Is Doing

Instead of focusing on what has not happened yet, pay attention to what God is already doing.

Gratitude helps us stay patient.

4. Read God’s Word Daily

Scripture strengthens us and reminds us of God’s promises.

The more we fill our minds with His truth, the easier it becomes to exercise self-control.

5. Learn From Past Experiences

Think about situations where impatience caused problems.

What could have been done differently?

Learning from those experiences helps us grow.

Waiting Does Not Mean God Forgot About You

I think this is something many people need to hear.

Just because you are waiting does not mean God forgot about you.

Just because the answer has not come yet does not mean God said no.

Just because the door has not opened yet does not mean it never will.

God knows exactly where you are.

He knows what you need.

And He knows when the time is right.

📖 Isaiah 40:31 (KJV)

“But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength…”

Waiting is not wasted when God is involved.

Self-Control Protects Relationships

Another reason self-control is important is that it protects our relationships.

How many arguments could have been avoided if someone had paused before speaking?

How many friendships could have been preserved if people controlled their emotions?

How many misunderstandings could have been prevented?

Self-control helps us speak with wisdom instead of reacting out of emotion.

That does not mean we never express how we feel.

It simply means we do it healthily.

God Demonstrates Patience With Us

One thing I am thankful for is God’s patience.

Think about how patient He is with us.

He continues:

  • Loving us
  • Teaching us
  • Guiding us
  • Correcting us

Even when we make mistakes.

Even when we do not listen right away.

Even when we struggle.

If God can be patient with us, then we should strive to be patient with others too.

📖 Psalm 86:15 (KJV)

“But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth.”

God’s patience is an example for us to follow.

Patience Produces Growth

One thing I have learned is that patience develops maturity.

It teaches us:

  • Trust
  • Discipline
  • Endurance
  • Wisdom

Nobody enjoys waiting.

But waiting often produces growth that could not happen any other way.

The same is true with self-control.

Every time we choose wisdom over impulse, we grow.

Every time we pause before reacting, we grow.

Every time we trust God instead of rushing ahead, we grow.

Final Thought: Trust the Process

If you are waiting on something today, I want to encourage you.

Trust the process.

Trust God’s timing.

Trust what He is doing behind the scenes.

And while you wait, practice patience and self-control.

Do not allow frustration to lead you.

Do not allow emotions to make decisions for you.

Allow God to guide you.

The blessing will come when the time is right.

The answer will come when the time is right.

The opportunity will come when the time is right.

Until then, keep trusting.

Keep praying.

Keep growing.

Because God is working even while you wait.

And what He is preparing will be worth the wait.

📖 Galatians 5:22-23 (KJV)

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering… temperance…”

📖 Psalm 86:15 (KJV)

“But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth.”
