Many people believe they can serve both God and the world, but the Bible teaches differently. Learn why choosing who you serve matters and how following Jesus brings true peace, purpose, and freedom.
This Is a Question We Do Not Ask Ourselves Enough
Who do you serve?
God or Satan?
That is a serious question.
And honestly, many of us probably do not think about it often.
We are busy living our lives.
Going to work.
Taking care of family.
Handling responsibilities.
Trying to make it through each day.
But somewhere along the way, we have to stop and ask ourselves:
Who am I really serving?
Whether we realize it or not, our choices reveal who has our heart.
Many people think they can serve both God and the world at the same time.
They believe they can live one way Monday through Saturday and then switch gears on Sunday.
But eventually, a choice has to be made.
I Had To Make A Choice
I can be honest about my own life.
There was a time when I enjoyed worldly things.
I went to church.
I believed in God.
I knew who Jesus was.
But if I am being truthful, I was not fully focused on Him.
I still wanted to do what I wanted to do.
I wanted God when it was convenient.
I wanted His blessings.
I wanted His protection.
I wanted His help.
But I also wanted to live life my own way.
And after a while, I realized something.
That lifestyle was exhausting.
Because I was trying to hold on to two different things at once.
I was trying to serve God while still holding on to things that were pulling me away from Him.
And eventually I had to make a decision.
Who was I going to follow?
Who was I going to serve?
You Cannot Serve Two Masters
The Bible is very clear about this.
π Matthew 6:24 (KJV)
“No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other…”
Jesus knew something we often struggle to accept.
You cannot fully serve two different masters.
At some point, one will take priority over the other.
At some point, one will have your attention.
At some point, one will have your heart.
That is why Jesus calls us to choose.
Not halfway.
Not sometimes.
But completely.
The World Makes Serving Two Masters Look Normal
One reason this is such a difficult topic is that the world makes it seem normal.
The world tells us:
- Do whatever makes you happy.
- Follow your feelings.
- Make your own rules.
- Live however you want.
And honestly, that sounds appealing sometimes.
Because nobody likes being told what to do.
Nobody likes giving up control.
But what the world does not tell us is that following its ways often leads to confusion, emptiness, and disappointment.
People spend years chasing things that never satisfy them.
Why?
Because only God can fill the place that was created for Him.
When Trouble Comes, Who Do We Call On?
Here is something I thought about.
When trouble comes, who do we call on?
When we are scared.
When we are hurting.
When we need help.
When we feel lost.
Most people are not calling on Satan.
They are calling on Jesus.
They are praying.
They are asking God to help them.
They are asking God to make a way.
Why?
Because deep down, we know who has the answers.
Deep down, we know who has the power.
Deep down, we know who can save us.
That alone should tell us something.
What Are We Feeding?
One practical way to determine who we are serving is by looking at what we feed.
What are we feeding every day?
Are we feeding:
- Our relationship with God?
- Our prayer life?
- Our faith?
Or are we feeding:
- Constant negativity?
- Temptation?
- Worldly desires?
Whatever we feed grows stronger.
That is true spiritually, too.
π Galatians 6:7 (KJV)
“Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”
The seeds we plant today eventually produce fruit.
God Gives Us A Choice
One thing I love about God is that He does not force Himself on anyone.
He gives us a choice.
π Joshua 24:15 (KJV)
“Choose you this day whom ye will serve…”
God allows us to choose.
But choices have consequences.
Choosing God leads to life.
Choosing the world’s way leads us further from Him.
That is why this decision matters so much.
Following Jesus Changed Everything
When I decided I wanted to serve God fully, things began changing.
Not because my life suddenly became perfect.
But because my perspective changed.
I found:
- More peace
- More purpose
- More joy
- More direction
I stopped trying to carry everything myself.
I learned to trust Him.
I learned that His way is better than mine.
And honestly, I have never regretted choosing Him.
There have been difficult seasons.
There have been challenges.
But I would rather walk through them with Jesus than without Him.
Let’s Make This Practical
Sometimes people hear messages like this and wonder:
“What does serving God actually look like?”
Here are a few practical ways.
1. Spend Time With God Daily
You cannot build a relationship with someone you never talk to.
Spend time:
- Praying
- Reading your Bible
- Listening for God’s voice
2. Obey What God Shows You
Serving God is more than hearing His Word.
It is applying it.
When God speaks, obey.
Even when it is difficult.
3. Evaluate Your Priorities
Ask yourself:
What gets most of my time?
What gets most of my attention?
What gets most of my energy?
The answer often reveals what we are serving.
4. Surround Yourself With Godly Influences
The people around us influence us.
Spend time with people who encourage your walk with Christ.
5. Be Willing To Let Some Things Go
Following Jesus sometimes requires letting go of things that pull us away from Him.
That can be difficult.
But it is worth it.
Do Not Harden Your Heart
One thing I want to encourage people about is this:
When God speaks, do not harden your heart.
Sometimes He calls us.
Sometimes, He convicts us.
Sometimes, He shows us areas that need to change.
Do not ignore His voice.
Open your heart.
Let Him work.
Let Him guide you.
Let Him transform you.
Because the closer you get to Him, the more you realize He only wants what is best for you.
Team Jesus All The Way
I am not here to tell anyone what decision to make.
God gives all of us a choice.
But I can tell you the choice I made.
I chose Jesus.
I chose the One who gives me peace when life feels chaotic.
I chose the One who gives me comfort when I am hurting.
I chose the One who gives me strength when I feel weak.
I chose the One who never leaves me.
I chose the One who died for me.
And honestly, I am Team Jesus all the way.
Not because I am perfect.
Not because I have it all figured out.
But because I know where my help comes from.
Final Thought: The Choice Is Yours
At some point, all of us have to answer this question:
Who do I serve?
Not what do I say?
Not what do I post?
Not what do I claim.
But who do I truly serve?
Because our actions reveal our answer.
Today, I encourage you to think about that.
Take a moment to examine your heart.
Ask God to reveal anything that may be pulling you away from Him.
And if you hear His voice, do not ignore it.
Open your heart.
Let Him in.
Allow Him to lead you.
Because choosing Jesus will be the greatest decision you ever make.
And I pray more people choose to be on Team Jesus, too.

Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for loving me and allowing me to choose You. Help me recognize anything in my life that is pulling me away from Your will. Give me the strength to follow You completely and not be divided between You and the world.
Help me hear Your voice clearly and soften my heart to receive Your guidance. Fill me with Your peace, joy, and wisdom as I continue growing in my relationship with You.
Thank You for never giving up on me and for always being there when I call on You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
With Love,

Encouraged by Faith

I choose to serve God over Satan. My heart belongs to God, and I desire to flow His will, walk in His truth, and live according to His purpose for my life. Every day I strive to draw closer to Him, trust His guidance, and reflect His love. Though I may face temptation and challenges, my faith remains in God, and I seek His strength to lead me on the right path. My life is a testimony that I serve God, not the enemy, because He is the source of my peace, hope, and salvation.
