True friendship is more than being present during good times. Learn why praying for your friends through their struggles is one of the greatest acts of love you can give.
There Is Something Special About Real Friendship
There is something special about having real friends in your life.
I’m talking about the kind of friends who are there when life is going good and when life is going bad.
The kind of friends you can call when you need somebody to listen.
The kind of friends who already know by your voice that something is wrong.
The kind of friends who do not always have the perfect words, but they stay anyway.
Those kinds of friendships are a blessing.
Now I can only talk about my friends. They know something is good or bad, and I am right there for them, and the same goes for me. If one of them calls me happy, I am going to celebrate with them. If one of them calls me hurting, I am going to be there too.
That is what friendship is.
It is not just laughing together.
It is not just going places together.
It is not just about talking when everything is easy.
Real friendship shows up when life gets heavy.
And one thing I have learned is that being there for your friends is not only about answering the phone, texting back, or giving advice.
Sometimes the greatest thing you can do for your friends is pray for them.
I Thank God for the Friends He Has Given Me
I can honestly say that God has blessed me with some wonderful friendships.
Over the years, I have learned that real friendship is not about who is around when everything is going well. Real friendship is revealed during difficult seasons.
There have been times when my friends needed encouragement, and there have been times when I needed encouragement myself. There have been moments when we celebrated together and moments when we prayed for one another through hard situations.
What I appreciate most is knowing that we can be honest with each other. We do not have to pretend everything is okay when it is not. We can share what is on our hearts, encourage one another, and most importantly, pray for one another.
Friendships like that are a gift from God, and I never take them for granted.
We Cannot Fix Everything
A lot of times, we want to fix everything for the people we love.
We want to say the right thing.
We want to help them carry it.
We want to make the pain go away.
But there are some struggles only God can reach.
Some battles are happening in your friends’ hearts and minds that no conversation alone can heal.
There are some situations so deep that only the Lord can move in them.
That is why prayer matters so much.
Praying for your friends through their struggles means taking what they are carrying and laying it before God.
It means not just saying:
“I’m here for you.”
But also saying:
“Lord, I’m bringing them to You.”
It means standing in the gap for people you care about.
It means loving them enough to cover them in prayer, even when they do not know what to pray for themselves.
I have learned this lesson personally.
There have been times when someone I cared about was hurting, and I wished I could make everything better for them.
I wanted to have the right words.
I wanted to have the right solution.
I wanted to take away their pain.
But the truth is, there are some things only God can do.
As much as we love people, we cannot carry every burden for them. We cannot heal every wound. We cannot fix every situation.
What we can do is pray.
We can place them in God’s hands and trust Him to work in ways we cannot see.
That has taught me that prayer is not a last resort. Prayer is one of the greatest things we can do for someone we love.
Prayer Is a Real Form of Help
I think sometimes people forget that prayer is a real form of help.
We live in a world where people want visible solutions fast.
If we cannot fix it quickly, sometimes we feel helpless.
But prayer is not small.
Prayer is not what we do only when we have nothing else left.
Prayer is powerful.
Prayer invites God into the situation.
Prayer reaches places we cannot.
Prayer brings:
- Peace
- Wisdom
- Comfort
- Healing
- Strength
- Direction
Prayer allows God to move in ways we never could.
Philippians 4:6 (KJV) says:
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”
This verse reminds us that God wants us to bring everything to Him in prayer. Nothing is too big, too small, or too difficult for Him. When our friends are struggling, we can confidently take their needs before God, knowing He cares about every detail of their lives.
Some Struggles Are Hidden
Some of our friends go through struggles they never talk about out loud.
They smile in public and cry in private.
They keep showing up even when they are tired.
They say, “I’m okay,” because they do not want to burden anyone.
But God sees every silent battle.
And when we pray for our friends, we are asking God to step into the places they may be hiding from everybody else.
That is one reason I believe we should always be sensitive when it comes to our friendships.
Sometimes your friend is not calling because they need a speech.
Sometimes they just need somebody to listen and somebody to pray.
Sometimes they do not need you to have the answer.
They just need you to love them enough to take their burden to the Lord.
Bearing One Another’s Burdens
The Bible tells us in Galatians 6:2:
“Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.”
That verse reminds me that godly friendship is not selfish.
It is not all about what I need, how I feel, or what is convenient for me.
Part of walking in love is helping carry the weight of the people God has placed in our lives.
That does not mean we save them, because only God can do that.
But it does mean we do not ignore their pain.
We do not turn away when they are struggling.
We help carry them by praying, encouraging, and showing up in love.
Everybody Needs Prayer
One thing I want people to understand is this:
Everybody needs prayer.
Just because somebody goes to church does not mean they are not going through something.
Just because somebody loves God does not mean they never feel overwhelmed.
Just because somebody smiles does not mean they are not carrying something heavy.
We all have moments where life hits hard.
That is why we should never stop praying for the people around us.
Pray That Your Friends Grow Closer to God
When we are praying for our friends through their struggles, we should also pray that God reveals Himself to them in a deeper way.
Not in a forceful way.
Not in a judgmental way.
But in a loving way.
Pray that in the middle of what they are going through, they will feel God calling them.
Pray that they will know He is real, He cares, and He can keep them.
Pray that their struggle will not push them further away from Him, but draw them closer to Him.
Sometimes pain opens people’s hearts in ways comfort never did.
Sometimes, struggle makes people start asking deeper questions.
Sometimes, the season they hate is the same season God uses to get their attention.
That is why we should never stop praying.
We Can Support Our Friends, But We Cannot Save Them
One thing I have learned is that there is a difference between supporting your friends and trying to be their savior.
We can support them.
We can encourage them.
We can listen to them.
We can stand beside them.
But we cannot heal them.
We cannot change their heart.
We cannot make their decisions for them.
We cannot fix every situation they are facing.
Only God can do what God does.
Sometimes we care so much about the people in our lives that we begin carrying burdens God never intended for us to carry.
We worry ourselves sick.
We lose sleep.
We constantly think about their problems.
And before we know it, we are trying to do God’s job.
That is why prayer is so important.
After we listen.
After we encourage.
After we check on them.
After we do everything we can do.
We must place them in God’s hands.
Because God can reach places we never can.
Pray Specifically for Your Friends
Sometimes people say they are praying for someone, but they do not know what to pray for.
One thing that helps is praying specifically.
If your friend is dealing with fear,
Pray for peace.
If your friend is dealing with grief,
Pray for comfort.
If your friend is dealing with confusion,
Pray for wisdom.
If your friend is dealing with temptation,
Pray for strength.
If your friend is dealing with financial struggles,
Pray for provision.
If your friend is feeling distant from God,
Pray for spiritual renewal.
If your friend feels like giving up,
pray that God gives them the strength to keep going.
Prayer allows us to take every burden directly to God.
And there is no burden too heavy for Him.
Prayer Is One of the Purest Forms of Love
I truly believe prayer is one of the purest ways to love someone.
Because prayer is not about control.
Prayer is about surrender.
Prayer says:
“Lord, I love them, but You love them more.”
Prayer says:
“I can see part of what they are dealing with, but you see all of it.”
Prayer says:
“I can encourage them, but you can transform them.”
That is what makes prayer so powerful.
Sometimes we want immediate answers.
Sometimes we want instant results.
Sometimes we want God to move right away.
But prayer teaches us to trust Him with the process.
Prayer reminds us that God is working even when we cannot see it.
Real Friendship Includes Prayer
The Bible tells us in James 5:16:
“Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed.”
That scripture is powerful because it reminds us that healing is connected to prayer.
Not only praying for ourselves.
But praying for one another.
There is something beautiful about knowing somebody cared enough to mention your name before God.
There is something special about having friends who are willing to pray for you.
And there is something special about being that kind of friend for someone else.
Friendship should include:
- Laughter
- Encouragement
- Support
- Love
- Prayer
Pray when your friends are doing well.
Pray when they are struggling.
Pray when they are confused.
Pray when they are hurting.
Pray when they are making mistakes.
Pray when they are tired.
Pray when they are trying.
Pray when they do not even know how to pray for themselves.
Because prayer is one of the greatest gifts we can give the people we love.
Some of the Greatest Things We Do May Never Be Seen
One thing I have come to realize is that some of the greatest acts of love happen quietly.
People may never know how often you prayed for them.
They may never know how many times you asked God to strengthen them, comfort them, or guide them.
They may never know how many tears were shed on their behalf.
But God knows.
God sees every prayer offered in faith.
God sees every burden you bring before Him for someone you love.
And even when we do not immediately see the results, we can trust that God is working.
That is one reason I never want to underestimate prayer.
Some of the greatest things we do for others may happen when nobody else is watching except God.
Never Underestimate What Your Prayers Can Do
Sometimes people think:
“What difference will my prayer make?”
The answer is:
More than you realize.
Some people are where they are today because somebody prayed for them.
Some people made it through dark seasons because somebody refused to stop praying.
Some people found their way back to God because somebody continued carrying them before the Lord.
Never underestimate the power of prayer.
You may not see immediate change.
You may not see instant results.
Your friend may still struggle for a season.
But keep praying.
God hears every prayer prayed in love.
God knows exactly what your friend needs.
God knows how to break chains.
God knows how to soften hearts.
God knows how to restore hope.
God knows how to bring healing.
And He can do things that we never could.
Final Thought: Pray for the People You Love
If you have friends going through something right now, do not only worry about them.
Pray for them.
Do not only text them.
Pray for them.
Do not only say:
“Let me know if you need anything.”
Take them to God.
Speak their name in prayer.
Cover them in faith.
Ask God to help them through every struggle they are facing.
Ask Him to strengthen them.
Ask Him to comfort them.
Ask Him to give them wisdom.
Ask Him to draw them closer to Him.
Because real friendship is not just being there during the good times.
Real friendship stays when life gets difficult.
Real friendship encourages.
Real friendship supports.
And real friendship prays.
I thank God for the friendships He has placed in my life.
I thank God for friends I can celebrate with.
I thank God for friends I can pray for.
I thank God for friends who pray for me.
Because at the end of the day, we do not have to carry life’s burdens alone.
We can take every burden, every fear, every struggle, and every heavy thing to the Lord in prayer.
That is love.
That is friendship.
And that is something we should never stop doing.
Reflection Questions
- Do I regularly pray for my friends when they are struggling?
- Is there a friend God is placing on my heart to pray for right now?
- Am I trying to carry burdens that only God can handle?
- How can I become a better friend through prayer and encouragement?
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the gift of friendship. Thank You for the people You have placed in our lives to encourage us, support us, and walk beside us through life’s challenges.
Help us be the kind of friends who do more than listen. Help us be friends who pray.
Teach us to bring the burdens of those we care about before You and trust You to do what only You can do. Strengthen our friends who are struggling. Comfort those who are hurting. Give wisdom to those who are confused and draw those who feel distant closer to You.
Help us never underestimate the power of prayer and remind us that when we cannot fix a situation, we can always bring it to You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Ty 🤍
